This Veterans Day we mark the 100th anniversary of the 11th hour of the 11th day in the 11th month of 1918 – the time when an armistice was signed with Germany to end World War I.

Mom stands and looks at me with watery blue eyes. She feared losing Dad in Vietnam and instead lost him in a different war against cancer. No matter what the battle, the losses are the hardest thing to fathom or accept.

Yes, Memorial Day has changed over the years, but its spirit remains the same: to honor those fallen in the service of their country.
