This is a GREAT idea, since I’d love to have my collection in digital form (though I am still not sold on MP3 per se), but, gee, where will I come up with the $20,000 or so it will cost to convert my collection? I guess none of the kids really have to go to college. Interesting too that you would pay to degrade the quality of your recordings, but the flexibility and infinite sortability of digital formats IS very appealing.
The main discussion of P2P services glosses over the fact that downloading MP3s of songs you already legitimately own is a great time-saver and is even arguably legal given that format-shifting is a perfectly legitimate thing to do with your own property.
Maybe RipDigital would do it for free for me for promotional considerations, but then we have to think about transportation costs – another matter digital formats dispense with entirely.
Well at least this has me thinking.
