Previewing San Diego Comic-Con 2019: Thursday

The 50th Comic-Con International will commence in two weeks so the entire day’s programming is now being made available on their website, giving attendees the chance to start planning their activities.  The more interests one has the more difficult it can become, especially if those interests are popular. Here’s my Top 5 panels I hope to attend (in chronological order):

POPEYE’S 90TH BIRTHDAY PARTY (10:15am – 11:15am, Room 6DE) – To celebrate the spinach-eating sailor, King Features president C. J. Kettler, IDW Popeye artist Tom Neely, animation historian and author Jerry Beck, and the Warner Archive Podcast team of D. W. Ferranti and Matthew Patterson will be on hand to announce new King Features content, exciting merchandise, and events for 2019. Am going to tap out early for the next panel I want to see.

COMIC-CON IN THE 1970S (11:00am – 12:00pm, Room 5AB) – A commemoration of the convention’s first decade told by those who were there: Barry Alfonso, Wendy All, Maeheah Alzmann, Richard Butner, Roger Freedman, Eric Hoffman, Scott Shaw!, Brinke Stevens, William Stout, Phil Yeh.

THE TOYS THAT MADE US (12:30pm – 1:30pm, Room 6A) – The team behind the hit Netflix documentary series, show creator Brian Volk-Weiss, executive producer Robin Henry, producer Richard Mayerik, editor Nick Ferrell, and production manager Jackie Palombo, will be on hand to offer a sneak peak at the toys that are going to be featured in Season 3.

SPONGEBOB’S BIG BIRTHDAY BLOWOUT (1:45pm – 2:45pm, Room 6A) – This is a tough call because I was also thinking about the Dragon Ball Z 30th Anniversary panel, but since I saw their panel last year, I am going with this one.  It helps a lot that it’s in the same room as the panel before.  Taking part are co-executive producers Vincent Waller and Marc Ceccarelli as well as voice actors Tom Kenny (SpongeBob), Bill Fagerbakke (Patrick), Rodger Bumpass (Squidward), Carolyn Lawrence (Sandy), Mr. Lawrence (Plankton), and Clancy Brown (Mr. Krabs).

HOME MOVIES 20TH ANNIVERSARY REUNION (4:45pm – 5:45pm, Room 6BCF) – Having recently made my way through the entire series thanks to Cartoon Network rebroadcasting it, I am looking forward to hearing from creators Loren Bouchard and Brendon Small, and cast members H. Jon Benjamin and Melissa Galsky.
