Mulder, it's me! It's official! The X-Files is returning to Fox.

It’s Official: ‘The X-Files’ Returning to FOX

Mulder and Scully (David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson) reunite with Chris Carter and Fox to reopen The X-Files. The official news came this morning from The Powers That Be at Fox programming.Mulder and Scully: The X-Files Returns

It’s been 13 years since since the original series ran, a combination of “Monster of the Week” episodes and the tale of a government conspiracy about aliens, power, and politics. The series became a pop-culture phenomenon, inspiring a still-thriving fandom. The series debuted in 1993, running for nine seasons. The series faltered in its later seasons, first after moving production from the atmospheric  Vancouver, Canada to sunny Los Angeles and then (more significantly) after star David Duchovny essentially left the series. But this time, Duchovny has reclaimed his “I Want to Believe” poster and with Anderson, will re-open the X-Files, a dark, basement corner of the FBI. According to FOX, the series will begin production this summer. Further details “remain under wraps” for now.

Chris Carter explained, “I think of it as a 13-year commercial break. The good news is the world has only gotten that much stranger, a perfect time to tell these six stories.”

Over the years, there has been much talk about bringing the iconic sci-fi series back, whether in movies or on television. Of course, the first X-Files movie ran in summer 1998, when The X-Files was at the height of its popularity. A second movie, released after the end of the series did not fare as well, critically or with audiences. But really, The X-Files is made for the unique intimacy of the small screen.

Fox network executives noted,  “The X-Files was not only a seminal show for both the studio and the network, it was a worldwide phenomenon that shaped pop culture – yet remained a true gem for the legions of fans who embraced it from the beginning. Few shows on television have drawn such dedicated fans, and we’re ecstatic to give them the next thrilling chapter of Mulder and Scully they’ve been waiting for.”
