Do you have what it takes to write a great musical?

Festival of New American Musicals Show Search 2012 is On!

The Festival of New American Musicals Show Search is the first national competition available to high school and college-aged musical theatre writers. This is the fifth festival year (April 2012 – August 2012) that FNAM will be celebrating new musicals throughout Southern California.

The Festival’s Co-Executive Producer, Bob Klein, said, “Kids who want to perform have lots of opportunities through their schools and local youth theater groups. But for those who want to create, the opportunities are practically non-existent.”

“With Show Search, we can begin to offer opportunities for up and coming talent to showcase their passion for musical theatre and the arts in a way that will reach thousands, speak to new audiences, and will allow for prime exposure for these emerging musical playwrights.”

The 2012 Show Search was first announced back in November 2011 by FNAM spokesperson and Glee star Darren Criss.

FNAM’s Show Search is looking for young (13-25 year-old) musical theatre writers to pursue their dream by letting their creativity shine in a 10-minute, unedited musical.

From the submitted musicals, 20 semi-finalists will be chosen, broken down into two age groups, 13-18 and 18-25. From there, the public will choose their favorites and the three finalists will be selected from each age group by a celebrity jury.

If your musical is selected as a finalist, you have the opportunity to have your musical be brought to life at FNAM’s New Musical Staged Reading Series, as well as the chance to be mentored by a Broadway composer.

FNAM’s Show Search is accepting all 10-minute musicals in video form now. All submitted musicals will be judged based on storytelling, musicality, performance, and originality. All musicals must contain at least one character, and instruments must be utilized for the score. Keep in mind that your submitted musical should look more like a recording of a live performance and not a movie.

Make sure to submit your 10-minute, unedited musical for consideration by April 15.
