Warner Brothers covers a variety of genres with this year's slate of upcoming films.

CinemaCon 2019: Warner Brothers

The studio began with a roster of their upcoming movies based on DC Comics characters. Birds of Prey, Wonder Woman 1984, The Batman, Suicide Squad 2, and Joker, which is said to be a tragedy. The first teaser is presented, which reveals it will be an origin story.

Based on a young adult novel of the same name, The Sun Is Also a Star asks can you fall on love in one day. Another story for kids and collectors is Detective Pokemon. Melissa McCartney and Ben Falcone come out dressed up like they are at Comic Con. They are promoting SuperIntelligence, a comedy starring McCartney who has to convince an AI that humanity is worth saving.

From director-producer Bill Condon, The Good Liar is a thriller based on a novel by man in UK intelligence. Ian McKellan and Helen Mirren star. The latter was in attendance and got a rousing reaction from the theater owners when she said she loves Netflix, but “Fuck Netflix.” Out November 15. Blinded by the Light tells the story of a boy from Pakistan growing up in London who finds meaning in life through Bruce Springsteen songs.

On the horror front, there are sequels from the Conjuring Universe, The Curse of La Llorona (4/19) and Annabelle Comes Home (6/19), and sequels to Stephen King adaptations, It Chapter 2, and Doctor Sleep, the sequel to The Shining with Danny (Ewan McGregor) grown up. Writer/director Mike Flanagan has a daunting task tackling the latter.

Ed Norton stars, writes, and directs Motherless Brooklyn, a gangster story. Norton plays a guy with Tourettes so he’s expecting push back. Samuel L Jackson is back as Shaft, a mix of action and comedy. Based on a graphic novel, The Kitchen is set in the ’70s with the ladies of NY gangsters fending for themselves. The trailer brings to mind Scorsese and the film director wrote Straight Outta Compton.

The footage from Godzilla: King of the Monsters was presented as if we were going to be first to see it but I already saw it when Warner Brothers presented it at WonderCon. On the animation front, there’s going to be movies starring Tom and Jerry; Scooby-Doo called Scoob, which had a Dynomutt cameo; DC Super Pets; and Space Jam 2 with LeBron James.
