Chappelle Gets Clubby in Hollywood

Variety reports that wanderin’ Dave Chappelle popped in unannounced Wednesday night at two Hollywood comedy clubs, the Hollywood Improv at 10 p.m. and the Comedy Store at midnight, and laid some of his patented patter on the stunned crowds.

Chappelle told both clubs that he had just flown into town (and boy were his arms tired) and felt like performing. This would seem to further herald the slim comedian’s return to action after his disappearance caused the indefinite postponement of the third season of his hit Comedy Central show amid rumors of drug use and emotional instability, his subsequent reappearance in South Africa, and return home to Yellow Springs, OH about two weeks ago.

The release of the DVD set of the second season of Chappelle’s Show on May 24 set a record for TV DVD first-day sales (500,000) and first-week sales (1.2 million).
