Bookstores to Commemorate 9/11

On the Eve of September 11, Bookstores Plan Commemorations

With the anniversary of the September 11 attacks approaching rapidly, Hillel Italie of the Associated Press spoke to a handful of bookstores about their plans for commemorating the event.

Borders, which had a store in the World Trade Center complex that was destroyed in the attacks, is planning a “subdued” commemoration, according to spokeswoman Ann Binkley. She told the AP that Borders stores will hang posters featuring a porch with two wooden chairs and an American flag with the slogan “We Remember” on all storefronts.

In New York, St. Mark’s Bookshop will play subdued music to reflect the mood. Close to the World Trade Center site, which attracts many tourists, Shakespeare & Co. reports strong demand for books about September 11, which now dominate the local interest New York section.

Politics & Prose in Washington, D.C., a store within 10 miles of the Pentagon, will host 11 local authors.

Powell’s Books in Portland, Ore., will have no ceremonies for the public, but owner Michael Powell told the AP, “We’ll have an internal discussion, among employees, on the First Amendment and how the attacks have affected civil liberties, but I don’t want to do anything that seems like it’s taking advantage of the day.”

Black Images Book Bazaar in Dallas, Tex., will have a moment of silence, and Books & Books in Coral Gables, Fla., will hold a candlelight vigil in the store’s courtyard in conjunction with Amnesty International.
