78th Academy Awards Nominations

Brokeback Mountain rode into the sunset — er, make that sunrise per the early morning announcement — with eight Academy Award nominations, including best film, best director Ang Lee, best actor Heath Ledger, best supporting actor Jake Gyllenhaal, and best supporting acress Michelle Williams.

“I thought it was a small work of love,” director Lee told Reuters. “I never thought it would play like this,” Lee said of his cowboys in love film.

Also nominated for best film are race relations drama Crash, and George Clooney’s Good Night, and Good Luck, the story of TV newsman Edward R. Murrow’s attack on McCarthyism in the ’50s, which had six nominations apiece, including a best actor nom for David Strathairn, who plays Murrow in Good Night, and director nods for Crash’s Paul Haggis and Good Night’s Clooney.

The other best film nominees, Capote and Munich, scored five nominations each, including best actor for Philip Seymour Hoffman and best director for Bennett Miller in Capote, the biopic of the acclaimed, peculiar, and troubled writer; and Steven Spielberg for directing Munich, about the moral price paid by Isreal for targeting the killers of their athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics.

Interestingly, best film and best director nominations went to the exact same list of movies.

The 78th Oscars will be held March 5 in Los Angeles and televised on ABC with Jon Stewart as first-time host.
