Music Review: Those Fucking Snowflakes – ‘Everything Is Absolutely Fkkkkkkd’

The incredible agitprop band Those Fucking Snowflakes have released another barrage of vitriol aimed at the ruling class of the UK disguised as a record. Everything is Absolutely Fkkkkkked,  on Louder Than War/The Recording Industry is Dead records, is their brilliant, and in places ear bleedingly loud, response to the hypocrisy and uselessness of their current government.

The UK has a lovely track record of throwing up bands who are adept at reacting to the idiocy of their supposed betters. From the Who in the 1960s saying they hoped they died before they got old to Tom Robinson and The Clash telling the National Front and Thatcher to stick it, intelligent and skilled musicians have created songs and music for their times.

With their last EP, Straight, White, Wealthy Male Suffrage and now Everything is Absolutely Fkkkkkked the Snowflakes have made it clear they deserve to be mentioned in the same rarified company. Not only will their music make the toads in charge cringe and shrink back in repulsion, the lyrics to said songs are not just topical, but intelligent, well crafted attacks on the lies and hatred being spread by the rich and powerful.

Of course it does help to have at least some understanding about what’s going on in Britain at this time to understand some of the finer nuances of The Snowflakes’ songs. However, others have a universal message that anyone can relate to. A great example of the latter is “Due Some Terrible End”. “Time is meant to travel forwards not back/Our intolerant past returns again/If the far right feel this confident/You know we’re due some terrible end”

If that doesn’t strike a chord with people in North America after watching the events of January 6 2020 in Washington DC than they’re tone deaf. If The Snowflakes don’t sound like the kind of people who think you should reach out and try to understand fascist nut jobs you’re right. These are words of warning that if we don’t stand up against the tide of neo-fascism we will lose everything we’ve gained in the way of rights over the past few decades.

It’s on songs like “By The Power of Bernard Castle” where their contempt for the ruling class of Great Britain really shines through. (and yes Great Britain still has a fucking aristocracy based on family and money) During the first lockdown when everyone was instructed to stay at home and not travel, Dominic Cummings, principle advisor to Prime Minister Boris Johnson, jumped in a car and toddled off to visit his folks and have an eye exam miles from his home in London.

“The rules apply to us/But not to them/The rules apply to us/But not the bootlicking Eton elite/The rules apply to all/Unless you have wealth/In your place plebs/Or feel the master’s hand”. This song is such a damning critique of the British class system that it would make George Orwell smile.

The Fucking Snowflakes are loud, noisy and unabashedly anti-establishment. They are also providing the soundtrack for resistance against the rise of those who think Germany in the late 1930s was a great time to be alive. If you’re going to go to the barricades you need to have guys like this on your side.

Everything Is Absolutely Fkkkkkkd by Those Fucking Snowflakes is a great album that will motivate you to resist those who want you to know your place. It’s also heaps of fun and if you’re really lucky you might just learn something listening to it.

Aaron McMullan's 'Swing Hosanna, Sing The Salt' is a wonderful chaotic dream of an album. As fine a piece of imagination as you'll ever hear.
