CinemaCon 2023: Walt Disney Studios

The Walt Disney Studios celebrates 100 years with all seven studios under their umbrella releasing movies.

Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3 continues to bring the action, humor, emotion, and killer soundtrack that the franchise is known for. A scene was shown of the Guardians on a planet where Quill confesses his feelings to the resurrected Gamora, but she’s indifferent to him. Perfectly undercutting Quill’s emotion, Mantis and Drax let him know he’s on open line. The previously available teaser trailer for The Marvels, a sequel to Captain Marvel and the M, was shown, revealing that the three heroes’ powers are entangled.

Set for Thanksgiving, Disney’s Wish stars the voices of Ariana DeBose and Chris Pine. In the sequence shown, Asha (DeBose) sings about wishing for something more than this, and creates a wishing star. The live-action Little Mermaid was presented to the audience by director Rob Marshall and Melissa McCarthy, who came out to talk about Ursula. They showed the “Poor Unfortunate Souls” when Ursula offers to turn to Ariel human. It looked good. The Haunted Mansion remake comes out July 28. The trailer shown is narrated by Danny DeVito’s, which has some fun Easter eggs for fans of the iconic ride.

Pixar presented the first 20 minutes from Elemental. Fire girl Ember’s parents come to Elemental City but can’t find a place for fire people because no one will rent to them. They find an abandoned building and transform the neighborhood. Years later, Ember wants to take over family store after her mother dies, but she has a bad temper, which causes a water pipe bursts. Water guy Wade is a city inspector, who says the store is not up to code. Odds are this meet-conflict will lead to some type of friendship/relationship between. Then Pixar showed a trailer.

Searchlight showed a trailer for Taika Waititi’s Next Goal Win with Michael Fassbender playing a coach for a failing American Samoa soccer team. Looks like a familiar underdog-sports story.

20th Century Studios showed a short trailer that didn’t reveal much about A Haunting in Venice, the next Poirot film by Kenneth Branagh, other than it will be spooky. Set for release September 15. Also out in September, we got a look at The Creator, a visually impressive story about a man (John David Washington) is trying to save girl who turns out to be a robot.

Lucasfilm presented a sequence featuring Harrison Ford and Phoebe Waller-Bridge (is she Marcus Brody’s daughter?) chasing Mads Mikkelsen through city streets from the next (and surely the last starring Ford, no?) Indiana Jones movie. The Dial of Destiny comes out June 30. Ford appeared on a recorded video to greet the audience.
