Designing great iPhone apps.

Book Review: Tapworthy by Josh Clark

Whoever would have thought in 1876 that the telecommunication industry, based on Alexander Graham Bell’s invention, would widen tremendously into the current day communication network technologies up to touch screen mobiles, broadband internet and IPv6 networks?

From the radio telephony in military and civil uses in the 50s to the current discussions on fourth generation of cellular wireless standards, the humble mobile has come a long way.

One of the recent revolutions within the world of mobile phones is the approach to touchscreen brought by Apple’s iPhone. Within a short period, it has captured the imagination of large parts of the mobile consumer market. Additionally, it has spawned a extensive software development industry based on the iPhone and similar mobile touchscreen applications.

Tapworthy provides tips and tricks for new and existing software developers on the iPhone applications. The book discusses iPhone and its typical users. It presents the best practices of successful touch screen mobile applications with a focus on the iPhone and iPod touch interface.

There are many practical hands-on tips such as being aware of the size of the display compared to PC screens and hence utilizing the screen area appropriately, knowing how and when to build the screen rotation within the application, etc.

Choc-a-bloc with practical advice with a marketing approach, the book is a good read for the iPhone application developer growing along the touchscreen technology. And while the discussion has a strong focus on the  iPhone and iPod touch interfaces, it should also provide some assistance to any touchscreen application developer.

One of the useful additions to the book could have been an application developed by the author satisfying major considerations of design and usability outlined therein.
