If you caught last night's American Idol results show, you probably will understand why I am choosing to not cover it. Instead of reliving the lip-synced group numbers (seriously, two group numbers?), the random story time with Harry Connick Jr., and the unfortunate underwhelming performance by Lady Gaga, I am choosing to relive the best of Idol's past. (Oh yeah, Aaron Kelly was also eliminated.)
In lieu of talking about the results show that should have been only 30 minutes long, I would rather share five of my favorite Top Five performances from past seasons of Idol.
Kicking off my list is Carrie Underwood, who sang the Rascal Flatts' "Bless The Broken Road" during that season's country themed Top Five. At the time, this was one of the most popular songs on the music scene, and Carrie pulled it off beautifully.
My second pick comes from '60s/Neil Sedaka week during season two. That week Clay Aiken sang "Solitaire." That performance was nothing short of amazing. The dramatic lighting and stellar vocal made for a very nice performance.
My third pick is from season six's Bon Jovi week. Season six didn't exactly have a Top Five week, they had two Top Six weeks due to not eliminating anyone during Idol Gives Back that year. So, just go with me on this one. Bon Jovi is one of my all-time favorite bands, and I really was uneasy about their music being used and abused for Idol purposes. Blake Lewis did an amazing spin on Bon Jovi's classic, "You Give Love A Bad Name." This performance was entertaining to no end.
My next pick is from way back during season one, where the Top Five were singing Burt Bacharach love songs. The soon-to-be first winner of Idol, Kelly Clarkson sang "Walk On By." This performance alone shows why Kelly won. She sounds absolutely amazing. This also makes me wish that I had tuned into season one before Top Three.
My last pick comes from season seven's Rock 'N Roll Hall of Fame week. It should be absolutely no surprise that I am choosing David Cook's rendition of The Who's "Baba O'Reilly" as one of my favorite Top Five week performances. I really wish that time allowed David to sing the entire song, because this was a performance that definitely left me wanting more.
So, these are five of my favorite Top Five week performances from Idol's past. Do you agree/disagree with my choices? And I have to ask, what are your thoughts on Aaron Kelly being eliminated this week?
