The new Sonic game is coming. Oh yes, it is.

Screenshots: Sonic Colors

In one of the greatest filmic moments of the mid-1980s, one character states "I feel the need…" and is instantly joined by a second character as they complete the phrase "…the need for speed!"  It's a brilliant moment, one that hints at the fun that is to come.

In an almost wholly unrelated fact, it was announced today that the new Sonic the Hedgehog game, Sonic Colors, is due out this holiday season.  It will be available for both the Wii and the Nintendo DS, and the announcement trailer we saw today certainly makes it look like a whole lot of fun.

Details about Sonic Colors are still coming in, but we can tell you that the game features Sonic at an orbital theme park trying to free an alien race known as Wisps which have been imprisoned there by the evil Dr. Eggman (obviously).  The Wisps have some sort of "Color Power" that Sonic can use to create new paths through the levels.  Says Gary Knight, Senior Vice President of Marketing at SEGA in the press release "In addition to the classic Sonic gameplay style, the colorful new Wisp power-ups offer a fresh new way of exploring these worlds and helps make Sonic faster than ever before!"

Do we feel the need?  The need for speed?  Oh yes, we do, but we'll just have to wait until the holiday season to get our hands on the game.  Look for more screenshots later, but here are a couple of stills to whet your appetite.
