The PlayStation 3 (proper spelling) is Sony Computer Entertainments third video game console since entering the industry with their PlayStation One in 1994. Designed to have a 10 year life span due to its design the PlayStation 3 is the direct successor to the leading platform of its generation, the PlayStation 2.
Launched in November of 2006 the PlayStation 3 did not meet expectations with a weak launch lineup, difficult online presence and a high price point. Rallying to re-achieve past success Sony has drastically improved its online presence, launched many AAA titles and continues to update its firmware to provide many advanced features.
The PlayStation 3 features a Blu-ray player, Cell processor, hard drive on every unit, Bluetooth functionality, wireless onboard and HDMI output. The design was meant to be forward thinking and a true cutting edge media and video game unit. The PlayStation 3 is considered one of the finest Blu-ray players on the market but many developers have struggled while developing games due to the complex design.
