Robin Rogers releases a new record as she enters the fight of her life...

New Music Tuesday: Weezer, Linkin Park, Robert Plant, Kenny Neal, Brandon Flowers, Robin Rogers

This is going to be a pricey week for some of you out there as there are a number of really interesting releases for everyone- except maybe me.  Oh, there are a couple here that have my attention but most of these artists are famous for annoying me or stopped being interesting to me some time ago.  Best we go on and take a look at a few of them:

Weezer
Hurley

I’m more interested in the deluxe edition of Pinkerton scheduled for later this year than I am the new Weezer.  I stayed with these guys up through “Pork & Beans” and then finally had to accept I like Weezer better the way I remember them than what they’re doing now.  It’s fine.  I know Weezer is beloved by many and there is an audience for the early, mid, and current period of the band.  I’m going to stick with what has worked for me.  God bless Rivers Cuomo for carrying on with things and good luck with Hurley but I sat out Ratitude having been mostly unimpressed with “The Red Album.”  We’ve parted ways amicably.  Bring on the deluxe Pinkerton!

Linkin Park
A Thousand Suns

This is one of those bands I never liked.  Ever.  No, not even that one song.  I’m suspicious of the title of this record, too.  Whiny rap-rock never connected with me and these tough-but-sensitive, keep-it-real rockers will always be poster boys for that sound, style, and mentality.  I’ll be interested to hear what the band’s fans think.  I’m obviously not one so how do the folks who have supported them through the years feel about the new record?  I’ll keep an eye out for reaction.

Brandon Flowers
Flamingo

If you think I have a blood feud with Linkin Park, you ain’t heard nothing yet.  If I ever see Brandon Flowers or The Killers, I will fight them.  I will probably lose because I don’t think I could take a 4th grader at this point in my life (and let’s face it, I wasn’t exactly rough and tumble in the days of my youth) but that’s a fight worth fighting and losing on general principle.  Most of my hatred for this band comes in the form of Brandon Flowers voice, lyrics, and quotes from interviews.  We now get Brandon Flowers, on his own presumably with no filter.  Given the choice of this album or waterboarding, I’m taking the hose.

Robert Plant
Band of Joy

Okay, this one I might have to check out.  I loved the collaboration with Allison Krauss so much.  I don’t know much about this project other than it is a new solo record from Plant and the album takes its title from the pre-Zeppelin band that Plant and John Bonham were in together.

Kenny Neal
Hooked On Your Love

Bluesman Kenny Neal was part of Nick Moss’ All Star Jam in Memphis earlier this year at the BMAs and is one of the most popular bluesmen on the circuit.  I haven’t gotten a chance to listen to his latest for Blind Pig Records but it’s out just in time to be eligible for next year’s awards, so I’ll be giving it a careful listen.

Robin Rogers
Back In The Fire

So I’ve had my fun making cracks about other bands and having a laugh but things turn somber as we turn to Robin Rogers.  This is a tough album to discuss because the award-winning blues singer is now in the fight of her life and the odds are seriously stacked against her.  According to a release from her label, Blind Pig Records, Rogers was admitted to the hospital on August 18th with serious liver problems and has been diagnosed with liver cancer.  A CT scan prior revealed an untreatable cancerous tumor and she is not a candidate for a transplant.  She has been sent home for hospice care.

Many of Rogers’ friends have come together to support Rogers both emotionally and financially as she, like many independent artists, doesn’t have adequate health care coverage.  Award-winning blues artists Deb Davies, Bob Margolin, Bob Corritore, and many, many others have been doing their best to spread the word about Rogers’ condition and benefits are being held around the country to raise money for Rogers during this time.  Anyone interested in finding out more about the situation and how to help can access information on Facebook where a page has been created to coordinate information.

  1. Linkin Park is a legendary band.
For all who think otherwise, know them well before commenting.

They have a pretty deep history dense with amazing music.
