Lott of the North

Many have been explaining, if not justifying, Trent Lott’s tin ear for social commentary on his upbringing, the environment in which he grew up. There is some merit to understanding that Lott’s archaic views did not arise in a vacuum, but one should not be deflected from the primacy of personal responsibility in Lott’s case any more than in the case of a ghetto-dwelling criminal: it all comes down to what you do with that upbringing that counts in the end. How is Lott’s upbringing any different from that of Bill Clinton, or Sam Phillips for that matter?

Anyway, the deep American South is certainly not the only place to breed bigots – check out this shit-for-brains:

A native elder who has received Canada’s highest civilian honor has come under fire from Canadian Jews and aboriginal organizations for comments praising Adolf Hitler.

David Ahenakew, a national native leader in the 1980s and a recipient of the Order of Canada, was quoted as saying that Hitler was trying to “clean up the world.

“That’s how Hitler came in,” Ahenakew, 68, told the Saskatoon Star Phoenix newspaper.

“He was going to make damn sure that the Jews didn’t take over Germany and Europe. That’s why he fried six million of those guys, you know. Jews would have owned the goddamned world. And look what they’re doing. They’re killing people in Arab countries.”

….”These vicious and vile remarks stagger the mind and sicken the heart,” said Keith Landy, president of the Canadian Jewish Congress, in a statement.

“Mr. Ahenakew has disgraced himself, his community and the Canadian Armed Forces in which he served. From here on he ought to be relegated to the obscurity he so richly deserves.”

The group wants police to investigate Ahenakew under Canada’s hate-crimes laws, and wants him to be stripped of the Order of Canada, awarded in 1978 to Ahenakew for his work advancing native rights and education in the Prairie province of Saskatchewan.

Native leaders also decried the comments and worked to distance themselves from them and repair damage.

“We regret these insulting comments directed at our Jewish brothers and sisters who have in fact supported First Nations in many of our struggles,” said Matthew Coon Come, national chief of the Assembly of First Nations, in a statement. [Reuters]

Where do these twisted views of history come from? And why is it so often the Jews who are treated to such a vile reading? How can lies be so insidious? Sometimes I despair for the human race. At least Lott wasn’t advocating genocide, just a little space between himself and the darkies.
