Syfy Network’s highly anticipated “Saturday Original Movies” begin with the premiere of Red Faction: Origins on Saturday, June 4, at 9PM (ET/PT).
In a new cross-media partnership with worldwide game developer and distributor THQ, Red Faction: Origins will bridge the gap between the hit game Red Faction: Guerrilla and the newest title in the gaming franchise, Red Faction: Armageddon, which has a planned released date of June 7, 2011.
Red Faction: Origins stars Brian J. Smith (Stargate Universe), Robert Patrick (Terminator 2: Judgment Day), Kate Vernon (Battlestar Galactica) and a star studded cast. The movie follows the epic struggles and adventures of the Mason family, Martian colonists battling for survival and freedom.
In Red Faction: Origins, Jake Mason (Smith) embarks on a dangerous quest for justice to avenge the killing of his mother and to find his kidnapped sister. Jake is the son of Alec Mason (Patrick), the rebel hero who led the people of Mars to freedom.
The show’s star Brian J. Smith said about his involvement with the film, “this is not a retelling of the game’s story line, but a story based in the Red Faction’s world. It is a fantastic story direction, I had a great time portraying the character and felt connected to his story.”
Robert Patrick said, ”This is not just an outer space “shoot-em up,” there are amazing special effects, but the strength of the story is the real life issues that come up, like father and son connections, survivor’s guilt, just trying to make sense of a world gone mad. There are some amazing twists and turns making this a story the viewer can connect with on many levels.”
During the interview, I asked if this movie would expand into an ongoing series, “Since Red Faction: Origins is an original story based on the Red Faction world, it definitely lends itself to a potential multi-episode series,” said Brian J. Smith. “The ending of the movie Red Faction: Origins opens the possibility for additional movies, mini-series and more.”
This epic tale, Directed by Peabody Award winner Michael Nankin (Battlestar Galactica), Red Faction: Origins is promising to be the big summer hit on Syfy. The screenplay by Andrew Kreisberg (Warehouse 13) is based on a story developed by THQ Director, Fiction Development Paul DeMeo (The Rocketeer) and THQ Executive Vice President, Core Games, Danny Bilson (The Sentinel). Kreisberg also serves as executive producer.
Red Faction: Origins will be a great addition to Syfy original programming and I personally look forward to this amazing tale of action and adventure on the Red Planet.
