Google Maps is a free web-based mapping service that began in 2005. Over the years, Google has added many features including its extensive use of JavaScript code, satellite imagery, live traffic feeds, terrain features, and other popular destinations and landmarks.
The biggest feature for Google Maps is its easy-to-use API (Application Programming Interface) that allows users to customize their own maps to possibly embed on their own websites.
Another popular application is Google Maps for Mobile, which allows users to run on mobile phones to quickly find directions as well as their location based on either an Internet connection or a built-in GPS receiver.
As of May 13, 2006, Hitwise tracks Google Maps a distant third in Travel Maps market share behind leader MapQuest and runner-up Yahoo! Maps.
