This Weekend on Book TV: National Book Festival

Focusing on serious nonfiction and the publishing industry, Book TV airs continuously each weekend from Saturday at 8 a.m. to Monday at 8 a.m. on C-SPAN2.

Highlights and featured authors for this coming weekend:

Saturday, October 12 (All times Eastern)

8:30 a.m. Book TV provides coverage of the second National Book Festival. Hosted by First Lady Laura Bush and sponsored by the Library of Congress, the festival takes place on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, DC. Featured authors include Edmund Morris, Sebastian Junger, Henry Lewis Gates, Jr., Christopher Buckley, Dava Sobel, and David McCullough. Schedule for LIVE coverage: 8:30 a.m.

Opening Ceremony at White House. Speakers include Laura Bush, James Billington, Luci Tapahonson, and Jerry Stackhouse. 9:00 a.m. (Re-airs
at 8 p.m.)

7 p.m. Encore Booknotes. In this Encore Booknotes from 1993, Margaret Thatcher joins host Brian Lamb in discussing her political memoir, The Downing Street Years. The book, which covers Lady Thatcher’s tenure as Britain’s first woman prime minister from 1979 to 1990, is a first-hand portrayal of the events and personalities of her years in power. She provides accounts of her three election victories, the Falkland/Malvinas War and her alliance with President Ronald Reagan, the 1984-85 Miners’ Strike, the Brighton Bomb, and her encounters with politicians, both foreign and domestic. The book also contains over 50 photographs. October 13th marks Lady Thatcher’s 77th birthday.
