In conjunction with the release of their digital EP, Two Beautiful Lies, 30 Seconds to Mars has released a video for “The Kill,” the second single from A Beautiful Lie. The EP contains “The Kill” and a previously unreleased live version of “Attack.” It is available through iTunes and includes a 36 page booklet of fan supplied photographs.
The photo booklet is available only with the purchase of the EP and is the resulting answer to a call for help from the band. The band which is well known for their connection with their loyal fans requested they send in digital photos to be used in the liner notes of the single; they received more then 1000 submissions in 24 hours.
In the video, the lines between reality and fantasy are blurred in a dream like portrayal which was inspired by The Shining. It has spent the last two weeks at number one on MTV’s Hot Five Videos and enjoyed the top spot of Fuse’s Oven Fresh for the first week of May.
The band has a history of funneling the same creative energy into the videos they devote to the music and front man Jared Leto gives his acting. Their first video, to the song “Attack,” used a painstaking and artistic technique that involves scratching each frame of the negative. “The Kill” lives up to and exceeds the expectations set by “Attack.”
In a recent Blogcritics interview Matt Wachter and Tomo Millcevic discussed the making of both videos.
The video was filmed between the dates of an extensive tour. Commenting on the tour and A Beautiful Lie Leto said, “The incredible success of the tour and the enthusiastic response to the new CD has been nothing short of phenomenal. We look forward to continuing this amazing journey.”
