KFC Vietnam has closed all of its restaurants and taken chicken off the menu due to the spread of deadly bird flu throughout Vietnam. Vietnamese authorities have banned all poultry sales in an effort to stem the spread of the disease, which has so far taken eight human lives in Thailand and Vietnam.
When the restaurants reopen, they will feature fish, fish, and more fish: fried fish, steamed fish, even fish burgers. Hey, reminds me of Forrest Gump’s buddy while they were grunts in ‘Nam, enumerating all the wonderful shrimp dishes they’d be serving in their fantasized restaurant.
I guess KFC Vietnam’ll be calling fish “the other other white meat,” huh? Vietnam’s vast export-oriented catfish industry has encountered tough times recently, since the U.S. imposed heavy anti-dumping duties on Vietnamese catfish last year.
The Financial Times noted that “the chain could get a serious public relations boost – perhaps even be awarded national hero status by Hanoi – if it soon pronounces that its initials stand for Kentucky Fried Catfish.”
