Internacional Defeats FC Barcelona to Win World Cup for Club Teams

Not title favorites FC Barcelona but Brasilian Nacional are taking home the World Cup for Club Teams. Internacional adjusted to their tactics to frustrate their opponents. They struck 10 minutes before the final whistle and won 1-0.

For 90 minutes Internacional did not give away any space to FC Barcelona’s creative players. Barcelona did not succeed creating any holes in their opponents defense. They only became dangerous with long shots or freekicks.

Internacional were also unable to punch a whole in the Barcelona defense but they did not care much. It patiently waited while holding on to their tactical assignments given by their coach. It rewarded itself in the 81st minute when Iarley stole the ball from Carlos Puyol and found Adriano who did not hesitate and shot the ball past goalie Victor Valdes.

The World Cup for Club Teams is the only cup missing for Barcelona. Internacional is the only club after Sao Paolo to win the World Cup twice in a row.

FC Barcelona reached the finals by crushing Mexican team Club America with 4-0. FC Barcelona were a little worried because America had been in Japan a little while longer and had more time to acclimatise and the jetlag could pose a problem.

Those fears almost became reality when Claudio Lopez escaped the Barça defense after 5 minutes but his effort was in vain. His action was characteristic for Club America. It was able to create chances but were never persistent enough to become dangerous.

FC Barcelona were persistent enough. After 11 minutes Eidur Gudjohnssen scored the first goal after Andres Iniesta and Ronaldinho set it up. Rafael Marquez headed the second one against his fellow countrymen after 30 minutes after a corner kick from Portuguese Deco.

In the second half FC Barcelona was more playful. Ronaldinho aimed for the top corner in the rebound and scored the third goal while Deco made best goal of the match scoring from a large distance with extreme accuracy.
