It’s that time of year when the chill in the frosty air brings us indoors to hunker down with thick comforters and mugs of steaming hot chocolate overflowing with fluffy marshmallows. When holiday music and movies become the soundtrack to our everyday home lives. When we gather ‘round the fire for company, drink, food and love. When we are celebrating and remembering those we treasure and hold near and dear. When the real meaning of the season is family – by our DNA or by our heart. When we reflect and give thanks for all we have. In a nutshell, unconditional love.

I’d like to welcome Jessica Brody to share the beauty of the season with us.

Favorite Holiday tradition?

Eating! Wait, is that a tradition? Well, it is at my house!

Favorite childhood toy?

My easy bake oven. Although, I was (and still am) highly undomestic so most of the time, I would just make the batter (it was an add-water-and-stir kind of thing) and then eat it. Because cooking with a light bulb just takes too long. And why wait?

Favorite childhood game?

I was a HUGE board game fanatic when I was young. And still am, actually. The only difference is, as a kid, I had many more willing board game challengers. Now I practically have to bribe people in my family to play. But my favorite board game as a kid was Sorry! Probably because of its brilliant sarcasm. C’mon, are you really truly Sorry about knocking someone out of the game just as they’re about to win? Exactly.

Snow ball fight or making snow families?

Definitely snow families. I’ll choose that over getting smacked in the face by giant gobs of compacted ice any day!

Sleigh rides, sledding or skiing?

Sleigh rides! Although can you believe I’ve never been on one! I’m just assuming they’d be awesome given how many songs are written about them.

Favorite holiday song?

Adam Sandler’s Hanukkah song. Cracks me up every time!

Favorite holiday movie?

Love, Actually. My family and I watch it every year!

Favorite holiday story to read?

Probably The Grinch Who Stole Christmas. Darn that Grinch!

Snow on holiday eve, day or just a chill in the air?

We moved to Colorado when I was twelve and even though I’m not a huge fan of the snow, I have to say, snow on Christmas morning is one of the best feelings ever.

Most memorable holiday memory?

When my sister and I were little, we caught Santa Claus on video. That’s right. Totally busted!

Did you eat popcorn balls as a kid? If you did, do you still?
I’ve never had a popcorn ball! But they sound delish! Where do I find such a thing!?

Real tree or artificial? Green or white?

I do love the smell of the real tree, but my environmentally conscious self keeps me from getting one. So we usually do a green artificial paired with some really good pine tree air freshener. :)

What do you do holiday eve?

We almost always go out for a nice dinner with my family.

What are your holiday plans this year?

I’m heading to Dallas for Christmas with my in-laws. I’m really excited. They do HUGE Christmases with lots of food, candy and presents. I always feel like a spoiled child there. :)

What’s the one holiday dish your family can’t go without?

My mother-in-law makes this potato dish that is to die for. It probably has a more elegant name, but we simply call it the “Cheesy Potatoes.” Or just, “The Potatoes that Make All Other Potatoes Bow Their Heads in Shame and Question Their Purpose in This Life.”

Please share a Holiday recipe.

I make a mean Pumpkin Spice cake. Although, as previously mentioned, I’m not very domestic, so it’s probably the most uncomplicated thing ever. You simply buy Spice Cake mix, then replace the oil with canned pumpkin instead, add on cream cheese frosting at the end, and voila! Heaven. This batter, however, I actually do bake. Well, most of it.

Holiday party tip?

7-layer dip, cake, and peppermint bark can easily be considered a full and balanced meal. So don’t eat dinner beforehand.

Favorite holiday decoration?

My mom has these really cool gold bells that she hangs up every year. Each one plays a different note and when you turn them on, together they play famous Christmas carols. Although she’s had them for several years now and some of the bells are broken so “Holy Night” is just a tad less Holy at our house.

Please share some magical holiday memories?

Every year that Santa remembers what I want for Christmas is a pretty magical year. :)

Wrap, gift bag or bow & go?

Wrap! It’s so much more fun to open.

Gifts or gift cards?

Both!

Cyber shop or head out into the trenches?

Oh, totally cyber shopping. You couldn’t pay me to go out in those trenches. This year, I had all my Christmas shopping done in the same time it would have taken me just to drive to the store.

Do you eat fruitcake?

No, but sometimes I act like one.

Do you head to the movies on the 25th?

Every year! This time we’re heading to see The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I loved the book. Although, after reading the book, I have a feeling it’s not necessarily going to be the “feel good movie of the year.”

What’s in your stocking? *wink*

I couldn’t possibly tell you. That’s for Santa and his Elves to know and me to find out! Although I will say they definitely know about my affinity for Pixy Sticks. (As does my dentist.)

What do you want in your stocking? *saucy wink aka swink*

LOL! I think the answer above says it all. Sorry, it’s not more saucy!

Do you head out on the 26th into the madness to exchange or shop for anything?

Not unless I have a death wish.

Thanks for such a fun interview! I really enjoyed that!

You’re welcome, Jessica. Thank you so much.
