If you’re looking for a challenge, the Virtual Console is the place to be this week. One of the most difficult games of its day is on the service this week. The rest of the download services, though, seen to take it easy, with much simpler games.

This week’s games are as follows:

On DSiWare this week, we have Petz Catz Family (Ubisoft, 1 player, 800 DSi Points), Surfacer+ (Lexis Numerique, 1 player, 500 DSi Points) and EJ Puzzles: Hooked (Electron Jump, 1 player, 500 DSi Points). Petz Catz Family allows you to take care of a family of cats. Surfacer+ makes use of the stylus to put flowers on the screen and make them grow while dodging enemies. EJ Puzzles: Hooked is a fishing-themed puzzle game focused around catching fish at the right time in the right spot. Wait, doesn’t that sound like fishing in general?

WiiWare has a few titles this week: JellyCar 2 (Disney Interactive, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points), Soccer Bashi (Icon Games Entertainment, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points) and a demo of Art of Balance (Shin’en, 1-2 players). JellyCar 2 is the sequel to the somewhat-popular game about racing squishable cars. Soccer Bashi is Breakout with a futuristic soccer theme to it, apparently. And finally, there’s the demo title of the weird, balance-related/stacking puzzle game Art of Balance.

The Virtual Console has two new games this week: Ghosts ‘n Goblins (Arcade, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points) and Exed Exes (Arcade, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points). Let’s start with Exed Exes, which is an insect/robot-themed vertical scrolling shooter. Ghosts ‘n Goblins, meanwhile, is self-inflicted pain in video game form. Known for its challenging and mind-crippling difficulty, the game puts you in the shoes of Arthur, who must be guided through a monster world that is out to kill you at every turn. Did I mention it was painfully hard?

Exed Exes came out on the Japanese Virtual Console in September 2010, while Ghosts ‘n Goblins came out on the Japanese Virtual Console in November 2010. Both were released last week on the PAL Virtual Console. They, along with JellyCar 2, Soccer Bashi and the Art of Balance demo, are available for download off the Wii Shop Channel, while Petz Catz Family, Surfacer+ and EJ Puzzles: Hooked are available for download off the DSi Shop Channel.

Check back next week for the latest round of digital releases for the Wii and DSi. Until then, happy gaming!
