Ever since Chuck Bartowski (Zachary Levi) got an email from a dark-haired spy in 2007 ("Pilot"), he has helped government agents fight terrorism. This includes FULCRUM, where rogue CIA agents abound. Now I get the impression some recruits were never CIA to begin with. Television bends reality sometimes. While the job is never easy, Sarah Walker (Yvonne Strahovski) and John Casey (Adam Baldwin), who keep Chuck safe, are no slouches when it comes to bad guys.
With only a handful of episodes left before the finale, the emphasis has been on preventing others from learning about Chuck's usefulness. It's not too hard keeping this from civilians, but rogue agents are another matter. Think about it. Spies can find out anything they want to know without trying hard. Desperation, however, can push someone to take risks. Especially if someone cared about is headed for a disastrous end.
Strahovski and Levi have portrayed a couple who know there can never be anything between them or their mission is compromised. So why would Sarah turn down the advances of Cole (Jonathan Cake), an MI-6 agent ready and waiting ("Chuck Versus the Lethal Weapon")? The chemistry between those two sizzles like nobody's business. I have a feeling the relationship may come back down the road.
At least Morgan Grimes (Joshua Gomez) has Anna Wu (Julia Ling) to keep him company. Grimes refuses to grow up, but he's also the most responsible of Bartowski's friends. The two have always been best friends, which has created a solid bond. Of course, the same can be said for Ellie (Sarah Lancaster) and Captain Awesome (Ryan McPartlin), whose marriage should draw viewers in as the season winds down.
Upcoming guest stars should also boost ratings higher. Tricia Helfer, of BattleStar Galactica fame, will be a spy who might be the carbon copy of Casey in personality. Helfer should not have any problems with a spy spoof, since she has already had a recurring role on Burn Notice. What should be fun is how people with strong personalities can share the same space.
