'Tis a big weekend in movie-going, and I'm here to sort out the pieces of crap or of gold that are opening this weekend.
First up is All the King’s Men, a remake of the 1949 Oscar-winning film of the same name. This one is starring a whole slew of talented actors, from Sean Penn to Jude Law and even Kate Winslet. Based on Robert Penn Warren's novel on the life of Louisiana Governor Huey Long, All the King’s Men is about a journalist (Law) who becomes enraptured by a fiery Southern politician (Penn).
This film is being tagged as an early front-runner for Oscar contention, and it’s starring some heavy-hitters, yet the reviews have not been too kind. This film may have people on the fence, but I say go decide for yourself. It should be an interesting film, nonetheless.
Also opening this weekend is Flyboys starring Spider-Man’s nemesis, James Franco. It’s a romantic drama about American pilots who volunteer for the French military before the US entered World War II. While I personally love Franco for aesthetic reasons (and his incredible portrayal of James Dean in the TV movie), this sounds a little bit like a snooze-fest. Only war movie buffs and teen girls will probably be drawn to this film.
Another film angling for the teen crowd is Jackass: Number Two. As if one wasn’t quite enough... Starring the same bevy of jackasses including Johnny Knoxville, this film is quite plotless in that it follows the hi-jinks of idiots who like to get kicked in the groin many, many, many times. I saw one picture where Steve-O has a leech attached to his eyeball. This is perhaps the most disgusting notion ever…Yet, this will probably be the number one movie in America come Sunday night. Go figure.

From what I've read, I'd go see Jet Li's final martial arts film "Fearless".
Personally I haven't seen a Sean Penn film in years and never will again.
