It's so corny that it's good is all that you can really say about the web clip Lazy Sunday. It evokes the memory of the Beastie Boys and what hip-hop used to be. Well apparently, NBC only wants you to see it on NBC.com. The good lawyers at NBC have forced popular video site YouTube.com to pull the video clip from its servers.
The clip was aired on Saturday Night Live in December and featured Chris Parnell and Andy Samberg roaming NYC one Sunday afternoon in hopes of seeing the movie The Chronicles of Narnia. Along the way, they get cupcakes, use Google maps, and make corny web references only Internet geeks would get. But via the power of Tivo and blogs the clip became an instant hit. With YouTube.com you can search for any uploaded clip and post it right to your blog. With it being so easy, Lazy Sunday was watched over 5 million times. But now NBC only wants you to see the clip on their website in their format or buy it as a download from iTunes.
This is a true case of the money-hungry people at NBC wanting to capitalize on Internet video and selling ads in that video. They really know how to take the fun out of the web. While it's cool to keep their content, they are going to have a hard time keeping good video away from those who want to just enjoy it for free. After all it's only a 2-minute clip and something quick, easy, and simple to enjoy. So NBC, give us our Lazy Sunday. You'll benefit more in the long run. It's really all in good marketing. You raise the awareness of SNL up among a new Internet-savvy generation, increase SNL's viewership and your website traffic. So there's really no harm in one happy, fun video floating around the Internet.
