But it’s clear that neither is Eric. He’s on Godric’s trail because if a vampire as powerful as Godric can be taken, all vampires are in danger from people. In True Blood, vampires may sometimes prey on humans for their blood, but the opposite is also true. Vampires are a desirable commodity, filled with an elixir many a human covets. The vamps were a lot safer when no one believed in them, something Eric is far more aware of than Bill. And in that wonderful True Blood way, the scene ends on a comic note, as Bill expresses his disbelief that Dallas vampires would openly attack humans in revenge for Godric’s disappearance. “Well,” shrugs Eric, “that’s Texas."
With Eric, Bill, Sookie, and Jessica in Dallas for some time to come, Jason’s connection with the Church of the Light links the stories together. I’ve been ready for this narrative thread to pick up the pace and get Jason back to Bon Temps, but I have to admit this episode drew Jason into the trap being set by Sarah and her hubby with style. The scene where Sarah dances seductively, only partly in Jason’s imagination, while he actually puts his hand up to block his view but ends up peeking through his fingers, was a hoot. He’s clearly headed for hot water with this Louisiana Hot Sauce, and he’s finally starting to realise it. Unfortunately, he joins the Church’s elite vampire assassination force first. Oh dear. I see conflicting loyalties ahead.
Sam is also conflicted, as he tries to leave town and instead of tearful goodbyes gets barbed insults thrown his way instead. Terry is furious with him and feeling the pressure of running Merlotte’s, while Sookie feels he’s throwing years of friendship away for no reason. The only one being nice to him is Daphne, who is starting to appear to be more than a clumsy waitress. Sam tries to avoid going to a party Maryann is throwing for Tara’s birthday, but Tara’s mom foils his plan when she sadly asks him to give her gift for Tara to her at the party. Sam drags himself off to the party, along with the rest of Bon Temps, and has yet someone else insult him as Maryann laughs at his warning not to mess with his friends. “You’re really not an alpha, are you?” she smirks as she walks away—not coincidentally taking Tara’s gift from her mother with her. You know Tara will never lay eyes on it. Sam, meanwhile, decides Daphne is making the party a whole lot more interesting, especially when she whispers she knows what he is. Now we need to know what her interest in Bon Temps is, as it assuredly is not waitressing.
