Despite a rocky start, the trip does help the family start to gel, with Jessica, the uber-teenager, bringing out very human qualities in Bill, from exasperation to sweetness. When Bill roars to life in the airport hanger to protect Sookie from her kidnapper, he bares his fangs to terrify the man—only to have the moment undercut by Jessica flailing about in her coffin because she can’t find the latch. He then decides he’ll use the man to bond with his ward, and in a lovely scene, teaches her how to glamour a human. It’s all very sweet, as Sookie says, until Jessica uses her new found ability to swipe a cell phone and to make the man yell out odd phrases at the top of his lungs in a posh hotel lobby. Stephen Moyer has a ball showing Bill changing from suave romantic lover to harried father every time Jessica makes a move.
Finally installed in their room, Bill glamours their unwelcome acquisition to find out why he wanted to kidnap Sookie and finds out that not only is the Fellowship of the Sun behind it, they also know about Godric. Naturally and delightfully, that links back to Eric, who has decided to sit a spell outside Lafayette’s window until he’s invited in, all for the purpose of offering Lafayette his blood to heal the young man’s wounds. Lafayette tells him he isn’t that stupid, but with his leg getting infected and going to the hospital out of the question given the many illegal activities he does to fatten his bank account, he has to give in, to Eric’s satisfaction. Lafayette is nobody’s fool and he shows why the character is such a fan favourite as he responds to Eric’s silky explanation of “I like you” with “Bullshit. You want to keep track of me. Why?” Eric’s response is that Sookie cares about Lafayette, so he cares about Lafayette—which brings his interest in Sookie out in the open. While Sookie’s mind-reading abilities have clear benefits for the sheriff, his interest appears to extend further than that—which should complicate his and Bill’s relationship even further.
And it’s complicated enough, as the two seem to have an almost brotherly rivalry. In past episodes, Bill has deferred to Eric when he’s had to, but this episode shows how far from cowed he feels. The two needle each other constantly as Bill demands to know how they fit into Eric’s plots and Eric reminds him he’s the sheriff and Bill has to listen to him. Eric teases Bill about his fear about protecting Sookie and Bill zings right back that at least he’s not a monster with no feelings at all.
