TV Review: The Office - Season Seven Finale

Part of: Reviews in Brief

The season finale of The Office mirrors the woes of the show's writers and producers at this point. Finding a replacement for Steve Carell is as tough, if not more than, replacing the bumbling and entertaining Michael Scott, Regional Manager of the Scranton branch. Diangello (Will Ferrell) was the first option but it didn’t quite work out. The 45-minute finale tries to pack in double the crazy.

The candidates were disappointing. James Spader was the only one who seemed like a strong foundation for a character that would later develop with the show. But this is assuming that Michael Scott is replacable. And let's face it, he isn't. However, of all the characters that attempted to do just that, Spader’s was the most entertaining. His confidence mixes with his belief that “There is no such thing as a product. Don't ever think there is. There is only sex. Everything is sex.” Now, that really shows his potential as boss.

Another positive outcome of this episode is that Creed finally gets to pull out a truly “nut-job” performance out of his hat. We see him deciding to start his own company. We see him calling cutomers and telling them he is “looking to poach some chumps.” We also see Pam being all his customers, making the whole situation one of the finest pranks on The Office. Basically we see Creed come into his own, because with great power comes great crazy. Dwight is another strong contender for the position although his new promise to be mellow does not sound promising for the show at all. Personally I’d rather see him at the height of paranoia, like the time he appointed himself as assistant to the regional manger because he needed someone he could trust. And where would he keep his assortment of weapons for self-defence if he were to be sane? Let us hope this new leaf is a fake one and he only keeps it up till he gets the regional manager position.
