TV Review: The 2010 MTV Movie Awards

Well, I suppose that writing about the 2010 MTV Movie Awards is the only way to reclaim the time wasted on a perfectly fine Sunday evening. For that reason alone am I doing it and, so you know, I purposely held it back a day so the DVR crowd could share in the discussion. Misery loves company.

Admittedly, this year marked my official retirement from the 18-35 demographic, of which they often speak. Still, nobody can convince me that we simply lose our sense of humor overnight. I mean, I grew up with MTV, in the very culture it once defined, and today I feel like a victim of one of their many Candid Camera rip-offs, realizing that I've just been tricked into watching a full-blown promotion for their upcoming shows and any movie with which they may be affiliated. I honestly would not be surprised if those ridiculous looking trophies, given out for bogus awards, were actually handed to the highest bidder, and what's worse, I could care less. It's not like you could tarnish the integrity of this thing any further.

Okay, it's time to talk about the sham. Please realize that to deliver a report on the event in a well thought out, organized format, rather than just a mishmash of random highlights, would not be an accurate reflection. Besides, much like my Avatar review, I refuse to spend more creative energy reviewing something than the writers did creating it. Here's what we saw:

The extravaganza was hosted by Aziz Ansari, who I know well from... um... the lame commercials for the 2010 MTV Movie Awards that were shoved down my throat all month. Come to think of it, I should've been tipped off, but listen, I won't crucify the kid. There is a pretty distinguished list of celebs who have bombed hosting real award shows. Besides, considering how they tossed the rookie out there to quarterback a team of aloof prima donnas, who obviously didn't bother showing up for practice, he wasn't half bad.

Good news: It was nice to see Ken Jeong, the funny little Asian guy who leaped out of the trunk in The Hangover, as he appeared in a cute song and dance skit.

Bad news: He browbeat everything that made me like him in the first place. By the time he gave his acceptance speech for whatever award he won, actually shedding a tear for his cancer-surviving wife in what could have been a touching moment, I was sick of seeing the dude. Leave it to an awards show on MTV to steal the genuinely rich humor that endeared the guy to us and bludgeoning his character with it for their own gain. It's very sinister. I hope his career survives.

I thought Tom Cruise was funny, and did a good dance number. I think the awards used to be funny, and the opening spoof was always entertaining. Seems too drawl these days, and Will Ferrell and Donny Wahlberg's brother were lame, and rude. Also, I always get the VMA's and the Movie Awards mixed up. Aren't they just the same show at different times of the year?

Tom Cruise as Les was ok, the same way Ken Joeng was....the first minute or so. Not because the skits were hilarious, actually they pounded good comedy to death, but because the movies they appeared in were funny. So, when they appear, we said, "Haha...I remember that." They should get sued. lol

Oh, the VMA's are "Video Music Awards", equally lame presentation, but at least it's MTV's forte. They give awards for ---est music video.
    Obviously, movies do movies.

    Thanks for commenting.

I did not watch this year's show but let me guess what happened: Some fabricated "controversy" happened, the host was the best part of the show, they gave awards to anyone affiliated with anything made by MTV(this year and every subsequent year there is a new Twilight movie it will be them), Will Ferrell showed up to make an ass of himself, middle-aged actors showed up to make the younger crowd realize they are not dead, the show was basically one long commercial for Viacom, anything mildly interesting that happened will be yanked off YouTube by Viacom. anything i'm missing?

while I don't understand using a psuedonym only to reveal your identity in your bio, I am even more confused by the three variations: ProfPlume, Professor Plumm, and prof plum. Which is it?

"Some guy who looked like a mix between Robert Plant and Carrot Top was there. Can somebody tell me who that was and why I should care?"

That was 2x Olympic Gold Medalist Shawn White. You should care if your a fan otherwise your not missing anything.
