TV Review: Stargate Atlantis - An Overview, Part II - Page 3

Part of: Stargate Atlantis

Stargate Atlantis has gotten progressively better. It seems to have dealt with cast changes much more quickly than SG1 did and has handled it extremely well. The storylines do not have quite the depth that SG1 did, however. Mostly, the show has been about the Atlantis expedition careening from one disaster to the next and ingeniously surviving. But it hasn’t really probed into serious issues along the way.

The fourth season has seen a few shows dedicated to certain characters and their development so perhaps this will be a continuing trend. After all, it is the characters that have made the show so fun to watch; it’s good to see what made them the characters they are. But it would be good to branch out into bigger stories, too. On SG1, the alien nemesis often brought on disputes about humanity and its nature and the beliefs in gods and monsters and such. Atlantis hasn’t quite gotten into that. It touches a little on origins and what makes us human, but very little.

It’s still my favorite show on TV right now and I’m very glad to see it launching into its fifth season this year.
