TV Review: Run's House Seasons 1 & 2 DVD

The first and second seasons of Run's House, MTV's hugely popular reality series, hit store shelves on March 20th. The series follows Rev Run of Run DMC fame, and introduces us to his family, giving viewers a hip-hop version of the Osbornes without as many censors. Along with his wife Justine, daughters Vanessa and Angela, and son's "JoJo," "Diggy," and "Russy," Rev Run's new show is like a upgrade from Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, giving MTV's audience a new vision of the hip-hop family unit at work. The Reverend is pretty good about keeping it PG in his household. It's only when Run's House has visits from potty mouth Uncle Russell that the bleeps and censors come in.

The show has received high praise and a decent following, as Run shows us the other side of hip-hop reality television. If you thought all Golden Era rap acts were destined to follow along the lines of Flavor Of Love, this show should remove any such fears. Not to be confused with the other Simmon's reality show, Run is very much the Reverend and does not let his family forget that. The girls and boys are reminded on several occasions that their actions reflect on the whole family, and they must act accordingly. In this way, Run's House begins to take on a Cosby-esque feel with Run playing the role of the loving, sometimes goofy, watchful and rich beyond your dreams Daddy. That may be the only aspect of this show that is no where near your or my reality.

When is the last time you saw a mink coat in your son's closet, or bought a lease program on a private jet, just because the salesman insulted you about your flight status? My guess is probably never. Then again, this isn't your average family around the block, its Run's House for real. That's what makes the show. It's a chance to take a good look at hip-hop royalty and watch how they rule over their kingdom. We get a brief glimpse of the inner working of their family owned mom and pop shop turned major corporations like Phat Farm and RSMG. It is also here that we see how the moguls really do it, in all their shirt stomping, profanity filled conference call making, Subway sandwich throwing glory, with Run playing the good cop in all the situations that arise.
