TV Review: Rock Star Supernova Week 10, Passing of the Her-ricane

Rock Star: Supernova had Brooke Burke revealing more than her pregnancy on elimination night. This year voting numbers were recorded as double the numbers from last year. A few reasons for this occurrence could be attributed to the Supernova band members. It could be as simple as it being year two of this show, or That Mark Burnett Productions have found an exciting group of contestants.

I imagine the folks at MBP are doing the happy dance, already scouting for next season's lead singer-less band. Host Dave Navarro proclaimed Tuesday night's show the best ever on Rock Star, and while he has overused the term, 'best ever' this year, I agree with him.

This week had them all in songwriting clinics with Gilby Clark, each worked on writing an original song. The test was to check their creative ability and innovation. Performances this week had them up twice, once with an original and then also performing a song selected from the list provided by Mark Burnett Productions and Supernova.

The featured Supernova track of the week, "It's All Love", had Magni chosen to accompany the band. Saving the best for last immediately entered my mind at the beginning of this song. It was by far was the best this band has ever sounded during their original performances.

Encore this week carried a prize to the chosen performer; 'Thunder from Down Under', Toby Rand, took the honors and the prize, a sweet spanking new Honda Element.

Rock Star has five contestants remaining and it's not surprising all of them circulated in the bottom three at some point in the voting Tuesday night. The final results of the bottom three had Dilana, Storm Large and, somewhat of a surprise, Lukas Rossi. Indicators have Magni soaring again with the highest number of votes closely followed by Toby Rand.

Elimination night saw the "what the what" elimination of the 'her-ricane' lady rocker, Storm Large.

Magni, The Iceman, performed the Beatles "Back in the U.S.S.R." Tuesday night and made it look so easy, that's why, in my perception, some folks mistakenly underrate this man. Magni roams the stage like a big cat; his movements are fluid and graceful and his vocals show pure power and natural ability.

Magni's original song, "When the Times Comes" was well-written, especially taking into account he first penned it in Icelandic then translated and made it work in English. Magni and House Band made that song sound highly marketable and airplay viable. His vocals were some of the best he has allowed us hear so far on this show. I continue to be amazed by his power. He slays me with his ability to retain tonality and tune. Magni never sounds like he's yelling the lyrics.

This has certainly been an interesting season and yes, the MBP people must be happy, happy, happy.

I must say that I was surprised when Storm got the axe and not Dilana. Especially after seeing everyone's reaction to her version of 'Wish You Were Here'. More telling to me than Jason's tears was the fact that right afterwards, Tommy couldn't/wouldn't hold his face up to the camera...as if he was afraid of the emotion it would show. It is as impossible to deny her talent as it is to deny her beauty. Didn't you just LOVE that all four of the guys (SN AND Dave Navarro) offered to back her up on future recordings???

I can see Dilana's appeal to the band...if we're talking about the wild and crazy Tommy from the early Crue days that is. But between what I've perceived as uneven performances in the last 3 weeks from her, and given the fact that the SN tracks we've heard to far seem to be your basic M.O.R. guitar heavy tracks...I'd have had to have borrowed the parting remarks from Inxs last season and told her "I'm sorry, Dilana, you're just not right for our band". And please...I just gotta get this out there...when the hell was Cheap Trick a punk band????

Lukas? I just couldn't get behind his cover tune this week either...especially when he sang the lyrics "Tommy whispered "Baby it's ok" at full volume!!!!! And I thought his attitude regarding the song writing session with Gilby bit the big wienie.

Both Magni and Toby have been my top contenders to win from the get-go...I think it just depends on what type of band SuperNova decides to be... good time party rockers or intense and primal metal-heads.

I agree with you about Ryan...I know that he's campaigning hard to be called back for next week's show and it bound to work because of his talent and smoldering looks. Truthfully...he doesn't need to though. He's signed with a top agency and his licks are there. I think the show was just what he needed to gain exposure.

I guess that's how I feel about Storm as well. The fanbase that she's gotten because of RockStar: SN will help her carry her career well into the future. BTW...now I'll have to back and read the rest of your pieces on this show...gotta find out what you thought of her version of "I Will Survive".

lookin' forward to reading more of your work...

tink covered it well with it's going to depend what image and presence Supernova want and really how serious are they about forming and committing to a real band.

Shock value and party hardy, they'll run with one of the glam rockers. If Tommy Lee and Gilby decide they might want to change direction in their rocker lives and get serious about making some real integrity rock music Magni is their guy.

Toby brings energy and force regarding crowd participation. He's a real hands on bloke. He's party hardy, get the girls kinda guy; but I have to hand it to Toby, his treatment of "Layla" (Eric Clapton) is still with me, I really liked what he did with that song.

Lukas with them just creates a confusing image; he's very Marilyn Manson and they just don't fit the part.

Dilana has evolved into a trick or treat fiesta of conflict and drama. I see "Nightmare Train to No Where" as their first CD together.

I plan to follow Storm Large, her career and music; I really like that lady.

Why did they let Storm go?? She was great and her performance was very memorable and moving. Dilana was mediocre again with her performances and songwriting ability. It really seems like she's given up on this thing, and I'm not sure who in Supernova is pulling for her at this point. Maybe Tommy? Gilby didn't seem impressed with her songwriting ability and wasn't excited by her performance and Jason seems middle of the road with Dilana. If she wins this thing, I'll be shocked.
I see a Toby/Lukas showdown for the top spot. The guys don't seem to be behind Magni, and I have to admit, he doesn't seem the right fit for this band. I think he should take the House Band on the road. I think Magni's too good for Supernova to be honest. He's too polished, too perfect and I think that's why Supernova seems hesitant to give him the big thumb's up. If SN is looking for a straight up rock n roller who makes the young girls swoon, Toby's their man. If they want a more serious tone and still make the young girls swoon, Lukas is the way to go. I like Lukas. I like his songwriting and think he's a more creative artist then Toby, which even Toby has admitted.

Hi Rob, if this show was running with the eliminations based on performances of the week(s) Dilana and her trick or treat crutches should have been put off the show. Stormy's rendition of Floyds' tune was beautiful.

Fan forums are running with 'who's the biggest chick magnet' and other threads like that currently with Toby taking the lead in those "deep" debates. I like the Tobster quite a lot, and there is a part of me that really likes Lukas (he's such a 'freak', what's not to like).

I think Gilby and Tommy Lee would not know how to act with Magni. T.Lee's used to living life on the Cheese Ranch and he's not ready to leave his Velveeta Spread. Saw him on Regis, his usual 'energetic' self.

Magni would be great with House Band. Mark Burnett has hurriedly rushed out a CD with Star, following the 19E path; recording the finalists - hit that iron while it's hot. Good for Star. Let's hope we never witness Hairy Hoodie Redux, though.

I'm pulling for The Iceman, sit and listen to his song with Supernova with headphones, his vocals are too good for them. Should he not get it (doubtful but hey, it's not over) Luke or Toby would work.

Way I'm hearing it with the tour, House Band may be performing with several of the finalists, each getting a featured set. (Starting to remind you of any other reality music show?) We'll also get treated to Navarro and Panic Channel.

Mark Burnett is a smart man.

Why did they let Storm go? Because, for one, she's a terrible fit with the band. They mentioned long ago that she was very Broadway and that's where she seems to want to take things, which is not where this band obviously wants to go. Not to mention that her voice is limited - people seem to be wowed by it, but she hits a lot of flat notes when she should be able to soar. Her original song more than proved that she's not stylistically suited to rock - she's aiming for pop/hip-hop, not metal-based rock.

The rumor is the band made up their mind long ago, just as INXS did early on in their season on JD, to go with Lukas, and I have a feeling we'll see him take the win next week despite not being very impressed with him the past 4 weeks or so. I think Magni is by far the most talented, but as others have said, I'd actually rather see him on his own because this band will simply hold him back. He's actually good. Toby is certainly a crowd pleaser, but I don't see how he's stylistically a good fit for the band - and Dilana's issues from a couple weeks ago were certainly well-timed by the producers to help the band get out of looking very suspicious when they don't choose her. I've been predicting Lukas from the beginning, when I really liked him, and I'm still predicting him now, but I think he's grown stale, unfortunately.

Thank you Tom, regarding your Dilana comments, my thoughts exactly. I'm glad you see the talent in Magni; I think that a huge curve ball has been thrown in the links the past two weeks *wink* - I'm thinking that MBP and SN thought he'd be gone by this point. How stunned were they when he had The Most Votes last week and topped them again this week as well? It's been a campaign but it has been worth it. I love to help topple apple carts.

Stormy wasn't a fit for the band, but I loved her original song, that's her direction. She's not the best chanteuse ever to hit the stage but she possesses many great qualities.

Regarding Lukas, I thought he was going stale a few weeks past, I'm wondering if there is an understory here and he doesn't feel the need...

Anyway, fitting with this group with exception of Jason Newsted, whom I like very much, I don't see them understanding what Magni can do.

Rock Star Supernova Sees First Light I'd say pretty good on me for the first show. :) I had Magni wrong; his first impressions did not score with me. I was biased towards Zayra because I've seen her live in Dallas, but over all not bad for the first viewing ... I nailed one and two.

Now if I could just pick Lottery numbers...
