TV Review: Psych

USA Network was absolutely “psych”ed when they found out their newest detective show, Psych, had set the basic cable mark. The show premiered July 7, 2006, and gained the attention of 6.1 million viewers. It was, therefore, the highest-rated premiere for a basic cable series this year. Psych aired right after Monk, a show about a detective with OCD.

This time, the detective doesn’t have an extreme case of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. Shawn Spencer (James Roday) has a strange gift...or, at least, everybody thinks he does. He claims he’s a psychic when, in fact, he’s far from it. He is just really good at observing things. He and his friend, Gus (Dule Hill), open a private detective agency, Psych. Psych ends up solving police cases before the actual police do.

One would think someone would catch on to the fact that Shawn isn’t a psychic. That’s what makes it so funny. The only one who believes he isn’t a psychic is Lt. Lassiter (Tim Omundson). But nobody listens to him because Shawn is believable as a psychic. He knows things nobody else could figure out when he just uses logic.

I love the plot. How original is a fake psychic solving a police case? It hasn’t been done. I’m sick of watching the same old story. Psych is new, different, and exciting. Props to creator Steve Franks.

How Psych is written is absolutely wonderful. The characters are funny, yet the show doesn’t revolve around just comedy. It’s catchy, cute, and creative. When you watch Psych, it’s like you're part of the action, if that makes any sense. The only people who know Shawn is totally faking are Shawn, Gus, and you. It’s like you are part of the team, in a way.

My twin, Amanda, annoys me at times. I am like most people. I can figure out who did it in the last ten minutes or so. Amanda, on the other hand, can figure it out right away. I mean, right away. As soon as the culprit enters a scene, she knows. She shouts, “It’s him!” I convince her it can’t be because they are a witness, NOT a suspect. She tells me to just watch.
