TV Review: Project Runway, Season 3: Half-time Report

What a topsy-turvy season of Project Runway.  And we’re only halfway through! (As I type this I have to admit that A) I am not a fan of most reality TV and B) I have gotten a bit hooked on season three.)  Having only seen bits of the first two seasons, I can see why this one is such a hit.  The people and the challenges are more grounded in the real, in this case the world of fashion, than say a Survivor or Real World or Idol where everything is so contrived and make-believe.

The roommate thing almost makes sense, in a “sequester the jury” kind of way.  The only part about this show that smacks of TV staging is the editing of the catty asides by the  contestants.  There are scenes we see on the show, those we don’t but make the website (so BravoTV.com can sell ads I guess) which I won’t go read or watch because if they were all that important they’d have put them on the air.  So when designer A rags on Designer B in the beginning of an episode, you just know they will be paired together at somepoint.

So far this season we’ve had group projects, doggie designs, contestants that want to be fashion designers but don’t know much about past fashion icons (looking at you Alison; Bradley, see ya later) and more broken sewing machines.  Tim Gunn, you might want to check into that.  Vera Wang has pinch hit for Michael Kors; a cheater was turned in by the other contestants and kicked off the show, which was good riddance; and dumpster diving, always fun.  Plus there's the obligatory amount of opinion-holding assholes that need to shut up.

That’s when I tend to change the channel, when someone is being obnoxious or bitchy and I feel the hate starting to build.  I don’t care to get all that involved in a TV show, so when Jeffrey starts some bullshit I have to tune him out or I’ll start plotting his death which is never good.  But he does need to be “Outed” and soon.
