Without doubt, America was a country founded and built upon the institution of slavery. That being said, the institution of American slavery will always be a difficult subject to address, simply because most people would prefer to forget that period of American history. Nevertheless, despite the fact that time has passed, the past still lives inside the hearts, minds and history of all Americans.
Nearly 400 years ago, the first slaves were imported into Jamestown in 1619. And while Africans and Europeans both share responsibility in the massive Trans-Atlantic slave trade, America and her citizens should publicly acknowledge, continuously explore and sincerely express regret for this dark chapter of American history, so that the country may proactively mitigate the effects of its legacy.
Even though slavery has been universally denounced, in these modern times, as a crime against humanity, the time has now come to remove the shackles from our minds, lest they rob us of a prosperous future. A future filled with the hope of dreams long deferred. A future filled with the promise of multi-cultural harmony. And a future filled with change, in the way we love, treat and think about one another.
