TV Review: New Backyardigans Movie Hits Nick Jr. January 14

Maybe you're stuck babysitting that bratty kid down the block for five bucks an hour while your friends are at the school dance. Maybe you're trying to write your next novel and your kid just won't shut up. Either way, you're in need of a quick fix in order to save your mental sanity. Try turning on the Backyardigans' new movie Tale of the Mighty Knights, premiering Monday, January 14 at 7PM Eastern on Nick. It'll shut the kids up, while leaving you mildly entertained. Don't believe me? Fine. You deal with who hit who first. I'd pick the movie.

It all takes place during the week of January 14, which Nick has deemed "The Backyardigans Mighty Premiere Week." Along with the movie, Nick Jr. will also show three new episodes. Backyardigans (created by Janice Burgess, who also worked on shows like Blue's Clues) is a show about five neighbors who have way too much time to play make-believe in the backyard. It's computer animated; the regular voice actors are: Jonah Bobo, Gianna Bruzzese, Jordan Coleman, Sean Curlet, Jake Goldberg, Lashawn Tinah Jefferies, Gabriella Malek, Jamia Simone Nash, Thomas Sharkey, Tyrell Jackson Williams, and Oliver Wyman.

The movie is called Tale of the Mighty Knights and, amazingly is about the gang pretending to be knights. Adam Pascal, who starred in the Broadway play Rent and is releasing an untitled CD in early 2008, sings a song, "Not An Egg Anymore," which is quite good. Tyrone and Uniqua are pretending to be knights (while singing a quite catchy tune called "We're Knights"). Pablo, who's doubling as the King, tells them that their first mission is to guard an egg. Guard an egg? That's it. Piece of cake, right? Not when the egg decides to walk away. The egg leads them on a journey, during which they meet up with their friends Austin (doubling as the Snatching Goblin) and Tasha (who is role-playing as a sweet fairy).
