TV Review: My Boys Wrap-Up

And just like that, it’s over. My Boys’ finale aired on August 7* on TBS, wrapping up at least the first half of their sophomore season**. Set among the gorgeous vineyards of California, this two part episode was literally a breath of fresh air. Not that downtown Chicago doesn’t rock but this Simi Valley scenery was wonderful. And why were our young friends out in sunny CA? First, let’s look back a few episodes to catch up.

Oh boy! Bobby got engaged to Andy and Meredith’s beautiful au pair, Elsa (visa problems? – mumble mumble), and his mom has already fired three wedding planners. Meanwhile Stephanie has given out copies of her book, You’re a Nice Guy, But… to the boys, figuring that they’re not bright enough to realize some chapters are very close to home. Brando finally got out of the house to work at Andy’s law firm, in the unchallenging mailroom. What is challenging for him and the rest of the gang is trying to understand the growing friendship of Andy and his female co-worker, Jo (Nia Vardalos, My Big Fat Greek Wedding).

And all of this finds PJ right in the middle of the drama. She’s helping Bobby plan his wedding, helping Mike find a woman, and helping keep Brando sane. Poor Peej – she’s still as freakin’ adorable as ever, but not really any steps closer to finding that perfect man. The boys throw her a bit of a bone when they concede that she is the hot chick among them. But that still won’t earn an invite to Bobby’s bachelor party. Now here I have to briefly chastise PJ for thinking she’d be invited anyway. Even if she is the brightest star that the boys revolve around in their clumsy man-orbits, she’s still A GIRL. PJ – you really should know better honey. Like Mike told you, “…that’s because it’s a bachelor party – no girls allowed. Did you notice the word bachelor in the name?”

So PJ and Stephanie both attend Elsa’s bridal shower the same night, which is a big yawn for Peej, but spunky Stephanie finds a nice fan club for herself when the women find out that she’s self-help author/guru of …Nice Guy… She gets a chance to hold court in the Tupperware™ filled living room, but finally PJ drags her away with the promise of free drinks at a new bar in town.

And this is where they run into the boys. Turns out Bobby and the crew all had a great (and expensive) dinner elsewhere, but had to leave when Kenny’s fancy Cuban cigars set off the smoke alarms. So, they decided to close the night at Alibi, on Mike’s recommendation. Of course, he’s not thrilled to see the girls there, but the rest of the group is fine with a little estrogen boost.

An interesting development occurs at the bar, as PJ accidentally brought up, and then confessed to Bobby, the real reason behind the Italy invite. Of course, she explained that her whole having-feelings-for-him was all in the past now – “water under the bridge.” Bobby isn’t upset, as much as very surprised. He wants to pursue the conversation but PJ is distracted by the extra and unexpected estrogen appearance in the form of Jo, Andy’s “work wife”. PJ isn’t thrilled with Jo’s arrival, and pulls Andy aside to grill him. Andy insists that it’s not a “booty call”, they are just friends, and he’d never cheat on Meredith. But then he leaves with Jo, which alarms PJ further. And before she can catch her breath over the events of the evening, Bobby’s older brother, Jack (Billy Burke) swoops in and kisses PJ. Not that she minds. No, not at all.
