TV Review: Gilmore Girls - "That's What You Get Folks, for Makin' Whoopee"

Part of: Gilmore Girls

Isn’t Gilmore Girls so much better with Lorelai and Rory actually speaking and getting along? Last season was painful to watch because it was more like Gilmore Battle than it was Gilmore Girls. But now that the girls are girls again and their lives are connected once more, I actually care about what is going on in their lives.

Rory’s excitement over her love rocket has subsided since Logan doesn’t want Rory to visit him before Christmas. She could be on her tour of Asia right now, but, instead, is in Stars Hallow trying to act like a grown-up. Lorelai is back in Lorelai fashion. Once again, she is the mother you love and the best friend you need. Since Rory can’t go to Asia, Lorelai brings Asia to Rory by making their home, well, Asia—complete with dessert sushi.

Unfortunately, Rory’s father, Christopher, calls in the middle of Asia night and Rory figures out Lorelai slept with him. Rory isn’t excited by the idea and seems to find him an even less suitable mate for Lorelai than I do. That has to speak volumes if Rory finds it such a bad idea for Lorelai to hook up with him. And it makes sense, I mean, come on, haven’t they tried being together at least twice and hasn't worked out? Why anyone should expect this time to end any differently is beyond me.

Speaking of not working, let’s talk about Luke. I get that this is the first season with new writers for the show, it even seems as if they are trying to fix some problems from last year. But when you build an entire series on two characters' romantic tension so audiences beg for them to get together, you have one of two options. The first is you never, under any circumstances, let those two characters hook up. You keep the characters hot for each other and maintain the chemistry, but you never get them together. Which brings us to the second option. If the audience wants two characters to get together and you do write them into a relationship, you make sure it is a happy relationship that lasts. When the two break up, it will piss off such a large portion of the audience it runs the risk of destroying the ratings. It will be interesting to see how the writers pull off this storyline.

No truer words were ever spoken. Would you please send this paragraph, or the whole review as I agree with the rest as well, to the writers? Someone needs to let them know. I miss my Gilmore Girls of old, and it's just not good storytelling anymore.

Annie, hopefully the new writers will understand what all the fans know. If not, then I say we all bombard the writers and producers with our knowledge.

I agree, and I also have to worry about what kind of pseudo-love triangle they have in the works for Lorelai, Luke, and Christopher. I understand completely with the Girls wanting to end the show soon but with dignity (lest they be typecast as the Girls forever), but bringing Christopher into the mix I don't think in the right solution.

I, too, am anxious how the Lane thing will work out. I absolutely adore her character and the actress, although neither have been fully utilized in my opinion.

It's on the upswing again, yes...but thank God we still have Richard and Emily to fall back on even if that week's particular show is subpar.

I'm already tired of having most reviewers and most "fans" nitpick at the new season of Gilmore Girls. It reminds me of schoolkids who keep saying "My old teacher never did it that way!". Why ruin simply enjoying each episode by picking it apart? Give the "new guy" a chance, everyone! I do love the show but it is just a tv show, after all.

    Carolyn-

I think you've mistaken what everyone is saying. I think all the comments and the article have basically said the "new guy" is doing better already this season than the last two seasons were. No one was picking on the new writers. The complaints made were things written into the show before the writers changed.

That's great, but the title of the episode is Whoopee not Whoopi.

I agree that this season has gotten to a rocky start. I mean, can you really imagine Lane having a baby? While I'm on this subject, what happened to Ms. Kim? Anyways, I think the split between Lorelai and Rory was not bad, and you cannot seriously think that a mom and daughter are never going to get in a fight. I like this split between Lorelai and Luke because it helps Luke realize that he was just pushing Lorelai away. I can't help to think that Lorelai really does want to be with Christopher because she always turns to him when things don't go well with her boyfriends; for example, she calls him on the eve of her wedding with Max and visits him when she breaks things off with Luke. Whatever happens, I'll be tuned. However, I seriously do not agree with Lane getting pregnant. She should enjoy her marriage, and things are already looking bad for her and Zach.

I like the new writing. It is much more upbeat than last season. I could hardly stomach the first half of last season. However, I am very disappointed that Lorelai went through with the whole Christopher thing. She's supposed to be with Luke. It is so unfair to make us want them to be together so bad for so long, and now they are torn apart! It's so wrong!

i think that while Rory is gone she should run into Logan and they get back together and get married and of course Lorelia and Luke should get married and maybe have another kid!!!!!!!!! I think they should keep making seasons at least a eight one bc it didnt end rite but i really think that Logan and Rory need to get back together!!!!!!!
