It had been lacking for much of the season, but the usual fun and chemistry we’ve enjoyed for years helped open the episode. After a glum scene of Lorelai laying on the couch at Sookie's house, it appears Lorelai's oblivious to everything around her and absorbed in the drama of her rocky relationship with Luke.
A Friday night dinner with the elder Gilmores, during which Lorelai's mother Emily attempts to set up Lorelai's ex and the father of Rory, Christopher, with the daughter of a family friend, a psychologist, allowed for a healthy dose of the usual Gilmore humor. Rory, who was supposed to be in attendance, instead opted to throw a party for her boyfriend, Logan, who was soon to be off to England to help with his rich father's newspaper business. This left Lorelai to distract the awkward set-up with her usual cache of ridiculous questions in an attempt to save Christopher from further humiliation.
Emily Gilmore's attempt to set up Christopher fails miserably, but it provided an opportunity for Lorelai to spill her guts to a qualified professional. And she does so from the backseat of her car, filling her in on the ups and downs of her life with the Gilmores, her brief relationship in her teens with Christopher which resulted in Rory, and the bumpy relationship with Luke, whom she says is the only man she ever really loved and that they really belonged together. Luke, who has spent much of the season getting close to a 13-year old daughter he never knew he had until late last year, has put their June wedding on hold and, in doing so, unwittingly put their relationship on hold. The psychologist tells Lorelai that she needs to speak her mind and get what she wants.
And she does — she runs to Luke's diner and demands that he elope with her that evening, right then and there. Luke, understandably, is confused and thrown off guard by her frantic ultimatum and reacts like most rational people would — he asks that she just calm down and wait. Instead, Lorelai walks away, and when we see her next she's knocking on Christopher's door, who takes her in.

Well-written review about a witty show with some of the best writing on tv --it'll be interesting to see how it survives, cosidering the changes and circumstances. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to see it too much this season, so I hope to catch up in reruns, ending and all.

Everything you said was just spot on - one of the best reviews on the finale of Gilmore Girls!

I totally agree. All we can do is hope the new writers pull a "DALLAS" and make it all a dream and then show the reality of Luke and Lorelai getting married!! This season was uneventful. I am hoping the new writers make it much more exciting! Luke and Lorelai belong together. That is very clear! Putting Christopher between them would end the show!

I don't watch the show, but based on all the descriptions, it reminds me of the way that Aaron Sorkin left "The West Wing" after it's fourth season. He had the Vice President resign, the President's daughter kidnapped and Bartlet temporarily stepping down in favour of Walken. It was as if he was turning to John Wells and saying "okay, figure out how to get out of this one." I get the same sense here - the Palladinos are telling their successors and the network to figure a way out of this one.

I am amazed that so many people feel Luke and Lor belong together. How is that clear? She has never been much less than miserable the whole time she has been with him. He almost always puts her last. he doesn't communicate yet expects it from her. he is incessantly grumpy and tries to rain on her giddy prarade throgh life. What I found insulting was not that she wound up with Christopher but that they had her utter the unbelievable line that Luke was the first man she really loved. Who does she always wind up with? Who did she call when she knew Max was not the man for her? Who gets her humor? Who understands her? Certainly not Luke. The second worst line was when she said Luke gets her. You have to be kidding? Do you think Christopher would have not brought a gift on the Valentine’s outing they had? And Luke just takes what must have been an extravagantly expensive piece of jewelry Logan bought for Rory and pretends he got it himself. Luke has been a great friend to Lor and he is a great foil when she wants to tease someone or annoy someone. She never jokes with him, only at him. But when she wants to joke like she does with Rory? That is Christopher. With Christopher she has a back and forth wit like in a great Cary Grant/Katharine Hepburn movie. Luke and Lor as a romantic couple is a big black hole sucking all life out of Lor.

I agree with the last message. I wish that Lorlei would get back together with Christopher, Luke is so boring and I agree that they don't have the chemistry of a couple, they are better off remaining friends. Plus Luke sort of pushed Lorlei away when he found that he had a daughter. They should just end their relationship now, before they can't even be friends.

I agree that Lor and Christopher belong together. and i think that the season 7 will find her pregnant with christophers baby (again) only this time they will get married.

while overall, this was a good summary of the finale, there is one point you made that didn't seem quite accurate, regarding lorelai's seemingly rash decision to run to christopher:
first of all, there has always been sexual tension between lorelai and christopher, such as the time they slept together at sookie's wedding. that shows just how spontaneous they can be. lorelai has never been one to be completely sane or predictable-i think you are expecting too much by saying lorelai would never do something like that. while i am disappointed that she probably ruined her relationship with luke, i'm not really surprised that lorelai ran to christopher when she hit a major bump in the road with luke.
and lorelai sleeping with christopher, while it may have been stupid, had nothing in common with rory sleeping with dean. the reason lorelai got upset at rory when she slept with dean was because dean was married. but christopher is not married or in a relationship, so lorelai being with him was not "exactly what she had scolded Rory for two seasons ago".

wow. the truth hurts and you surely told the truth. i love gilmore girls but you were right about this being an uneventful season and possibly a plot to ruin the show. personally, i think they should just have luke and lorelai get married and be happy together...if they think dragging it out is going to make people stick to watching it, they are desperately wrong. in fact, it makes me not want to watch the show anymore if it going to turn into a melodramatic soap opera. and i read one comment someone said something about making it all be a dream...i really do think thats a good idea to get the show back on its feet.
all i can say is, good luck Rosenthal, im pretty sure your gunna need it.

I agree with one of the previous commenter - it didn't strike me as weird that Lorelai suddenly slept with Christopher. Probably not as well developed, but definitely not unexpected.
That said though, it almost seems like a repeat of season 2 (which I just watched on DVD). Towards the end of season 2, Christopher was getting closer to Rory, and by that token, Lorelai too. It ended with Lorelai and him getting together at the inn during Sookie's wedding. It was almost going to be happily ever after until Sherry called Christopher to tell him that she's pregnant with Gigi.
In season 5, Christopher did start showing signs of closeness with the girls. During the elder Gilmores' renewal, I believe he even expressed his feeligns for Lorelai. He's also made steps to be closer to them, throughout season 6 - like offering to pay for Rory's education, and getting parenting advice from Lorelai. De ja vu anyone?

Oh i so agree with everything the first guy Tom said. Right on everything! Especially the last part. We all just need to give Dave a chance in writing the show and i bet he will bring it out of this dark hole its in and turn the 7th season into an amazing ending to show. We just gotta have faith in him. And after the 6th season finale, it really cant get any worse right? so its all up hill from here.

MY GOD!!!! i am so disgusted!!! i can't believe amy and daniel would do such a thing!!!!! luke & lorelai belong together!!! PERIOD!!!!

I have seen all the GG episodes ever aired and i can tell you right now that there is no reason to suggest that christopher and lorelai are going to end up together.I start seeing this bad stupid ending coming because they make that sherry bailed on chris an gigi, so we could have the ending that no one wants rorys parents together and lorelai can raise gigi and maybe have another child.
Since the first season they show us lorelai and luke as the ideal couple he is the one who is there,he is not just a good friend or a good coffee maker he is more...more. when he gave her the earrings and then the necklace the perfect match.
18 - Fernanda
i think it was the worst season finale i've ever seen!!!!!! lorelai and luke must be together that is what all people expected i hope lorelai isnt pregnant because that would be so wrong!!!!!

i love gilmore girls

I am in the middle, I like Chris and Luke for lorelai but I hate seeing loerlai all sad and dsepressed, it makes me depressed to even watch. i have loved G.G ever since the pilot but now it is getting from funny to sad.

Whatever happens, i hope we get some spoilers from somewhere about the 7th season, can't wait for it to return.
22 - kenzie
i think Luke and Lorelai are purfect we all know it they know it they will fix it they always do Chris can't handle the responseability. I love Gilmore Girls I would die with out it.
23 - Zut
i completely, 100% agree with this review. The idea that Lorelai would once again run back to Chris after all these years is insulting to viewers, Luke/Lorelai fans, and anyone who has been in Lorelai's position before. I know of no single mom who would allow the father of her child to continue to hurt both her and their child and continue to allow this person back into her life. The entire show has always pointed towards a Luke/Lorelai ending of the show, but why must we sit throught Chris/Lorelai, it's an insult to fans and single mothers around the world. I hope that other writers/creators/producers learn from the Palladinos screw up with this finale.
24 - Liz
I watched "partings" with my mom and she thinks that lauren might actually be pregnant and the writers will use that to show her have Chris' baby!
25 - alex
i have always loved gilmore girls and i was compleatly shocked to see that lorelai had slept with chris again. i hope the new producer can fix this and im kinda hoping that rori and logan might get married
