As soon as he's asleep, Sam swipes the keys and heads to the van. But then changes her mind and goes back to a passed-out Steve. She grabs the gun, hesitates a little, then shoots him over and over. Fade to black.
Do I blame her? Probably not so much considering the ordeal she went through. Yes, she could've just gotten away, but I think in her mind that wouldn't have been enough. Steve would've been locked back up, but he found a way out the first time and who's to say it wouldn't happen again. Killing my ex probably would not have been the decision I would've made, but if I were on a jury hearing that case, I wouldn't blame her.
Heady stuff, life-and-death decisions, chaos, tragedy — it's a good old-fashioned ER premiere! That said, this episode was also noticeably more graphic than others: they showed Neela hammering into Jerry's chest, with the last hit making the cavity open up like something out of a bad alien movie; they showed Coburn pull out what was either a placenta or a huge blood clot from Abby's stomach; even Steve's gunshots sent to kill to bad guys were loud and startling. I'm not one to shrink from graphic content, but I'm hoping this is not a trend we will see this season. ER doesn't need it.
Thirteen seasons and still going strong, with this explosive opener, ER has proven itself one of the must-see shows for the fall season.

Robin, nice write up.
I really wished I had seen this opener - last season ended with that drama (and trauma). So much TV - not so much time : )
