TV Review: ER - "Bloodline" - Page 2

We're all kept on the edge of our seats to see if Jerry will make it or not. Morris, Ray and Pratt, with Kovac to the side sucking on a nebulizer, finally stabilize him to go to surgery, where his heart stops to the bewilderment of the surgeons. Neela, who returned to the hospital with Pratt after the funeral, stepped in with an idea that saved Jerry's life.

Parminder Nagra has always done a fabulous job with Neela's ever-developing character. Though it was very hard to see her and Gallant have just a small amount of time together before his death in Iraq, there really was no where for that storyline to go. A necessary evil of television writing. It abruptly pushed aside the struggling feelings Neela and Ray had been dealing with, though I suspect that will come back in future episodes as John Stamos' character is due to return and become a love interest. In "Bloodline," Nagra really got to the heart of who Neela is, showing that though she is hurting, medicine will be her salve, especially when her friends are at risk.

Then there's the kidnapping. Just like as a mother lion will become vicious protecting her cub, so did Sam in protecting Alex from his father and his two accomplices. She seeks every opportunity to alert anyone she can that they're in trouble, but to no avail. It's not until they stop at what looks like an abandoned farm that she is able to take some control over the situation, though not before things get worse.

Steve and his cohorts can't decide what to do next, and Sam tries to escape in the van, but is stopped when shots are fired and Steve comes out of a nearby building. We're led to believe he killed the other two kidnappers, as they're not seen again. Steve waxes about how his life is going to be better as long as he has his family (and the gun in his hand slung around Sam's neck) and then proceeds to rape Sam. She didn't fight, she didn't scream, knowing that it would make things worse for everyone ("If I can't have my family all together, I'd rather see us all dead).

    Robin, nice write up.

I really wished I had seen this opener - last season ended with that drama (and trauma). So much TV - not so much time : )
