A detective's life is often filled with long hours and situations most people cannot even imagine. The only thing which helps is the camaraderie among those in the profession. Detective Stella Bonasera (Melina Kanakaredes) is about to figure out how strong those bonds are.
Stella has the difficult task of telling her boss, Det. Mac Taylor (Gary Sinise), also a good friend, that she might be HIV positive after cutting herself at a crime scene ("Heart of Glass"). Mac is hurt she did not come to him right away, but he understands that she thought she could handle things herself. Although tests results say she's fine right now, her situation could change down the road.
Mac allows Stella to stay on the job, since it is her sole source of calm. Professional duties taken care of, Mac promises to be there for her.
When a crime scene requires Mac's attention, however, it's a bit odd. Det. Don Flack (Eddie Cahill) is used to dead bodies. So, for that matter, is Det. Danny Messer (Carmine Giovinazzo). Neither has ever dealt with a twenty foot wooden boat in someone's backyard. The owner is not much help, dead inside the house. A look inside the enormous vessel yields animals, each kind having two aboard. People hiding behind a curtain yields a hypothesis.
"Noah" is trying to set up a pyramid scheme using a Doomsday-type scenario. When Mac hears money was required to secure a 'ticket' for shelter during an assumed upcoming storm, he is even more convinced.
As he reviews the case, though, he has second thoughts. He tells Stella the victim was trying to save lives, not take them. He is unlike other infamous cult leaders such as Jim Jones or the guy in charge of Heaven's Gate.
The killer turns out to be the man's partner, a scam artist who thought she was being taken advantage of. Mac tells her she misinterpreted the victim's words.
