After processing an accident, Detective Mac Taylor (Gary Sinise) reminds Detective Stella Bonasera (Melina Kanakaredes) she has been working a lot of overtime recently. Homicide Detective Don Flack (Eddie Cahill) assures her they have control, and Stella heads home to her apartment building for a long rest.
It doesn't take long before she starts coughing. Yelling in the hallway jerks her awake, and Stella realizes a fire has broken out. Once the fire department lets people back inside, the enormity hits hard. Mac soon arrives with a cup of coffee and a warm hug. They both understand what could have been lost.
Dr. Sheldon Hawkes (Hill Harper) and Detective Lindsay Monroe (Anna Belknap) assist in the effort to figure out the fire. Flack tells them arson is suspected, and a corpse has been found in the ashes. Due to incineration, there is not much to work with, however, an ID is found nearby for Sean Nolan (Ron Melendez General Hospital: Night Shift). Flack discovers a history of arson, which makes Sean the prime suspect. He is ruled out, but questions remain.
Lindsay calls Detective Danny Messer (Carmine Giovinazzo), who says if there is anything he can do for Stella, he will. The abruptness of his tone confuses Lindsay, but he hangs up before she can question him. She doesn't realize he has had an overnight visitor - Rikki Sandoval (Jacqueline Pino Lincoln Heights), the mother of Ruben, Danny's young neighbor who died during a bodega robbery. Danny felt responsible when it happened since he was supposed to watch Ruben at the time.
Only now have Danny and Lindsay gotten to talk about it. Lindsay is upset Danny did not try and share his feelings with her. After all, she lived through seeing several friends die ("Silent Night"). Worse yet, she fell in love with Danny. Now she has to walk away from the relationship.

Danny is an ass!
Feeling guilty or not he shouldn't have slept with her.
I've basically lost all my respect for Danny and that's sad because he was my third favorite character.
Hopefully Lindsay does break up with him, she doesn't deserve that. All she ever did was care for him.

I was absolutely disgusted by Danny's behavior in this episode, I too have lost all respect for him. Not only was he lying and cheating, right after he got off the phone with his girlfriend, but there was no remorse at all in following scenes, only vague excuses and trying to reverse the blame onto Lindsay.
I am shocked that the writers who have spent so long meticulously creating believable characters would sink to such a soap opera storyline. There are so many better storyline that would infuse drama and believable character development, but the crass actions of cheating with the dead boy's mother, cheapens Danny, the whole Ruben storyline and the whole show.

The fire was added a good touch to the show this week. The Ruben and Rikki Sandoval story is cluttered. Disppaointing too.
Would Danny be better to walk away from Lindsay and start a new romance with Rikki? Would the writers take that chance?

Trista, they could. Would they? Another story. I can see Danny sleeping with Rikki simply because they are across the way neigbors and so see one another often. Romantically, though, I like neither Rikki nor Lindsay. They both want what Danny cannot provide - stability.
