TV Review CSI:NY "Necrophilia Americana"

Part of: CSI:NY

New York has a variety of slogans, perhaps one of the most well known being "the city that never sleeps". There is a good reason for this—one can find something to do no matter the time.

In the Museum of Natural History, a man's voice can be heard telling visitors about the newest exhibit. One display, however, is unique in that the focal point appears to be missing. While it has not been stolen, it has relocated: a dead woman has the exhibit, beetles, all over her body.

Det. Mac Taylor (Gary Sinise) and Det. Stella Bonasera (Melina Kanakaredes) arrive to begin processing the scene. Mac picks up a scrap of paper with some sort of drawing on it. Stella notices a trail of blood and realizes the beetles came down from the upper floor before they came to a stop on a dead woman. Mac explains they probably smelled blood.

Roll opening credits.

Mac talks to the guard who tells him the dead woman is Ceci Astor, the curator. When Mac asks if she is related to the man who donated the museum wing, the guard replies that Ceci is the grandaughter.

Across town, Det. Danny Messer (Carmine Giovinazzo) arrives when Det. Don Flack (Eddie Cahill) needs help finding the person who murdered a man at a construction site. Danny remarks that the man looked out of place. As he processes the scene, Danny sees a large hole dug in the freshly laid cement. When he takes a closer look, there is a golf ball tucked inside. Could that provide the answer to this mystery?

Det. Lindsay Monroe (Anna Belknap) and Dr. Sheldon Hawkes (Harper Hill) arrive at the museum. Mac tells Lindsay that since she has an affinity for bugs, she can start working on the beetles. It's an inside joke, referring to the time when Lindsay ate a deep fried insect brought into the CSI office for the team to try ("Fare Game").

Mac hears running footsteps and follows them. He finds a young boy hiding between two exhibits, clearly traumatized. Thinking the child might have been an eyewitness, Mac coaxes him out and takes him to the hospital.

From the inscription on the golf ball, Flack finds the driving range where the victim practiced his game. When asked if anyone had the initials F.O.B., the owner says no. However, he continues by saying the victim had promise at the game of Urban Golf.

This is an actual golf game, only it uses the streets of New York as the course. Since it's easy to get to the facility, and any number of objects can be used for the hole, there are many people who play.

The owner gives Danny and Flack a list of people with whom their victim regularly played. After they see that one man checked himself into rehab for alcoholism, they realize F.O.B. stands for "Friend of Bill". They set out to go and chat with their main suspect.

I suppose that the obvious answer to your question would be that Mac's wife was pregnant when she died. I'm not sure I'd like that - I watch the CSI shows to see something other than the obvious answer and for the most part I'm rewarded.

I'm not so sure the obvious answer is right either in this case. Mac did mention something last season which made me think a child had died, or just remembering happier times. Of course, we could both be wrong and Mac and wife never had children.
