In a ‘living tableau’ at a UN reception, members of the French consulate perform scenes from history. When the woman who portrayed Marie Antoinette dies before the fake guillotine falls, Det. Mac Taylor (Gary Sinise) is called upon for his expertise in crime solving. They discover the guillotine was not responsible for the woman's death, even though the body ended up in it. However, they suspect poison might be involved.
Before they can test the theory, the assistant to the chief of detectives halts proceedings. The team is allowed to process, but the French Embassy will not let them touch the victim's body without their consent. Mac isn't happy, but he has no choice but to play politics. Dr. Sheldon Hawkes (Hill Harper) mentions he knows of several substances which could kill without being detected. All he needs is an hour, and Mac agrees. Since there is blood on Hawkes's gloves from his examination, they have something to work with.
Det. Stella Bonasera (Melina Kanakaredes) talks to the teenager who was with the victim moments before death. At first, she is sympathetic to the trauma Evie Pierpont is going through. However, the teen has to be considered a suspect when another death turns up with ties to Evie and victim number one.
Hawkes brings the case to its conclusion when he traces FDA patents to the Pierpont attorney. Luther Vandeross was being blackmailed by the first victim after she learned he was an embezzler. He injected poison into a piece of chocolate, which she ate before she died. Stella later realizes Evie told her tutor about the embezzlement. While Evie never suggested murder, two people died due to her actions. Unfortunately, manipulating people is not grounds for arrest.
Across town, Det. Don Flack (Eddie Cahill), Det. Danny Messer (Carmine Giovinazzo) and Det. Lindsay Monroe (Anna Belknap) examine the remains of a deceased chef. They realize a fight took place, and the chef was stabbed. Complicating matters is a roach in the chef's mouth. Ewwww!
