For a long time, Chuck has kept viewers talking long after the episode fades to black and the closing credits roll. This time was no exception. There were one or two snags, which I'll discuss later. First things first.
The wedding everyone has long expected finally arrives between Ellie (Sarah Lancaster) and Devon aka Captain Awesome (Ryan McPartlin). This is the sister of Chuck (Zachary Levi) I'm talking about, which means something or other is bound to go wrong. It seems our Nerd Herd slash reluctant government spy cannot keep his family truly safe no matter how hard he and his handlers, NSA agent Col. John Casey (Adam Baldwin) and CIA agent Sarah Walker (Yvonne Strahovski) try. And why not? Chuck's dad Steven (Scott Bakula, Quantum Leap) designed the Intersect. This piece of government technology helps Chuck figure out which puzzle pieces belong where. It's just a tad crucial to each and every mission.
When Dad and son meet up after a decade of long-suffering absence ("Chuck Versus the Dream Job), the reunion is rocky to say the least. It only gets tougher when Chuck finds out father dear's code name is Orion; he also has the ability to remove the techno whatsit and let Chuck be a normal guy again. Don't bother asking how the Intersect works, it just does. Ted Roark (Chevy Chase, Fletch), Orion's former business partner, wants it badly. What doesn't help is Roark working for FULCRUM. Uh-oh! FULCRUM takes CIA agents and puts them on the payroll of terrorists. Talk about a classic spy movie shtick. One never knows who is a friend or enemy. The last people you expect are those willing to show no mercy and be absolutely ruthless. Think shades of The Manchurian Candidate, and you get the idea.
Chuck has less than an hour to give Roark the Intersect or see Ellie killed. Chase is dark and deadly as he delivers these lines, which says much for his acting ability. No bumbling detective here, nor, for that matter, the fumble feathers his family dreads every time he plans a vacation. The look on Chucks's face as he hears is solid as well. It's pure panic to save the closest family member he has, but he generally has a plan.
