TV Review: Chuck - "Chuck Versus the Colonel"

Ask anybody to talk about ORION, and most people will mention the constellation which is typically described as the hunter. The three stars which make up his belt can be seen clearly if one knows where to look. To Chuck Bartowski (Zachary Levi), however, it means something else entirely. Chuck's Dad Steven (Scott Bakula, Quantum Leap) uses the moniker as his code name within the government intelligence community.

When Orion is taken hostage by FULCRUM, the rogue CIA group, Chuck is more than ready to go grab dad back. He manages to convince CIA agent Sarah Walker (Yvonne Strahovski) to help him. She agrees, even though she is committing treason in order to assist.

This episode is not about either chuck or Sarah, though. It's about John Casey (Adam Baldwin), the NSA guy who is directly responsible for keeping Chuck safe. He just cannot stop him from getting in harm's way. Casey does what he does best by going full out furious in order to get the job done. The promotion to Colonel is a nice touch! I especially liked his squaring off with Walker, each with a gun drawn. The stance comes in handy when they work together to kill a FULCRUM agent.

Why am I not surprised a radiator would never slow Casey down? The chemistry between Levi and Baldwin has always been solid. Casey, as Baldwin portrays so expertly week to week, puts duty above all. Anyone who dares to commit treason on Casey's watch would do well to go ahead and die before the military man arrives on scene.

Back at Casey's apartment, Devon Woodcombe aka Captain Awesome (Ryan McPartlin) makes the tactical error of trying to find out what has happened to Chuck by looking in Casey's apartment! Bad move. The security system kicks in and throws Devon into a makeshift prison. How nice of the writers to make sure Casey lets Devon out! This is a great touch.

McPartlin and Baldwin work well together, and are pretty much matched at a physical level. This is evident when they come to blows after an argument over Casey's mental state. Chuck and Sarah burst in not long afterward, and Devon finds out Chuck's secret. I'm not sure it took, though. There is a look of bewilderment on Devon's face as he tries to figure out what Chuck is saying. One small bonus happens after Ellie (Sarah Lancaster), Chuck's sister and Devon's fiancee, is alone with Devon. He has an opportunity to tell her the truth and doesn't.
